He was astonishingly good at being President. That's a cautious house of words. I don't agree with a lot of what he did; but he was very very very good in the role he was given; and dealt with two huge crises astonishingly well.

Of course, the people who should be most thankful for FDR are conservatives and libertarians; as the New Deal largely killed off any remaining hope of a mass appeal Socialist party.

If he ends up with a lower score, this series will officially be a failure.

I did my part giving Arthur 5 stars and FDR 2 stars.

4 stars.  His leadership during World War II was phenomenal, and even though I think his programs went too far by the mid- to late '30s and may have actually stagnated recovery, it's pretty hard not to respect the poise he held during the Great Depression.  The internment of Japanese Americans, however, was inexcusable.

This is a tough one. He made necessary transformations to the social safety net, regulation of banking, and collective bargaining rights, and his role in WWII was good for the most part. On the other hand, Japanese internment was terrible, some aspects of the New Deal were either flawed or not expansive enough, he refused to address lynching and civil rights as a whole, and the country would've probably been in a far better position had the Depression allowed a socialist party to take power. I think I'm going with 4 stars, because while he had his flaws, he was one of the most productive presidents the country ever had.

If not for the Japanese internment camps, he'd easily be the top president in my opinion. Five stars.

Chester Allen Arthur was a much better president so I don't see what would be so absurd about him getting a higher score.
