To make things short, Reagan offers the "Co-Presidency" to Ford after the first debate of the primaries and faces an uphill battle against the strongest candidates: Bush, then a point ahead of Reagan, Anderson, behind but catching up, Dole, who wasn't the vice presidential candidate in 1976*, and a handful of other candidates(Schweiker, Pressler, and Weicker).

Pressler, Weicker, and Anderson all tossed their delegates to Anderson at the Convention, while Bush dropped out after the first ballot. Many Anderson delegates walk out, but Reagan rallies several back with a speech he makes from the platform. Eventually, most of the Pressler delegates are back and the Weicker delegates are at the door with the rest. Ford refuses the vice presidency and allows Weicker to have it.

For the a Democrats, McCarthy, Gravel, Kennedy, and Muskie fight for the Presidency. McCarthy-Gravel delegates leave while the others begin backing a Kennedy/Muskie ticket.

The walk-outs cause a joint ticket of Anderson/Gravel, which becomes a serious competitor after William Proxmire endorses the Progressive Party.
In short:
Ronald Reagan(R-CA)/Lowell Weicker(R-CT)

Ted Kennedy(D-MS)/Edmund Muskie(D-ME)

John B. Anderson(P-IL)/Mike Gravel(P-AK:
Endorsed by Eugene McCarthy, William Proxmire

What happens?

*POD: Rockefeller remains Vice Presidential candidate; wins New York at the cost of a roughly equal number of electoral votes in the South
