Ah the joys of Jeremy Paxman.

Of "Did you threaten to overrule him?" fame - Interview with Michael Howard where he asked the same question about fifty times and Howawrd still didn't answer it.

Anyway, if you have a spare minute http://www.gbjab.com - it is amusing Smiley.

Nickshep, it could be any time before Blair steps down or is kicked out by his party, there is no set amount of time.

There 18 Irish seats 4 Cornish seats  that the Tories have no chance at, leaving 39 for them to contest, of which they would need to win 24 to get a double century.  I don't see the Cons doing that well .

Do you think he will eventullay be forced out or step down?  Or will he continue on as PM untill the next election?

Not sure, he won't face another election he has said. Also, it may not be Brown who replaces him.

The Tories could pick up the seat in Devon West.  I'm not sure if that is considered Cornish or not.

Looks like they DID pick up Devon West right as I was posting.

Not counting those 22 there are now 30 outstanding with the Tories needing 17 more.

that's how I'd put it as well.  something like that.  all three major parties will claim "victory"  In fact, they already are.  Also no doubt there will be oodles of stories in the British press questioning Blair's leadership, and that his party maintained its majority in spite of his leadership, and that it'll make it hard to get his programs (okay JJ, programmes) through.  But I seriously doubt that'll be the story in the US press.  My money's on "Bush's Closest European Ally Reelected to Historic Third Term"

Devon West is not Cornish.  Cornwall has 5 seats and the LibDems picked up the only seat there they didn't have from Labour.  I don't know why the Cornish seats have been so slow to report, but the 3 yet to report all have large LD margins.  Devon West had only a small LD margin, and while I was hoping that the LD could hold, I'm not surprised that the Tories won it.

There are a 48 out, and the Tories need 13 to hit 200.  A lot are in the south and few are in East Anglia.  This is exclusive of Devon.

It will be close.

How in hell can they put that as their leading story??
What's bad with the American Media?? is just plain ridiculous.
Has anybody opened a thread somewhere to discuss these kind of things? (not the runaway bride, but the fact that the media pay attention to that sort of things).

Yeah, and it's not any one station either.  Fox, CNN, etc. all do it

FOX is leading with the Jackson trial, the Abu Grahib fallout and the third term for Blair.

MSNBC is leading with the election.

She ended up here, in Albuquerque, so I've had to wade through this crap in the local media... Sad

I don't think 200 is special.  It's not like the number 51 or the number 60 in the US senate.  They'll get around 200.  And I think "around 200" was what those polling data Al posted, but said he didn't put much faith in, said it would be.  It's sort of anticlimactic in that sense.   I do think it would be as if the democrats won a few seats in the House.  The GOP would call it a "victory" since they hung on, and the Democrats would call it a "victory" since they gained.  That's exactly what you'll hear from both camps there.  The other interesting story is that a third party, the Liberal Democrats, will get around 60 seats.  And that the diminished strength of the Labour Party will make it tougher for Blair to push through his agenda.  He'll presumably make some deals with the LD party, but it won't be like before.  Still, I think the relative victory of Blair's party will have the effect of making him look good to foreigners, who won't be as familiar with the whole thing, but the story will be more complex in the British papers, since the story of an easy "blair victory" just won't fly the same way.

FOX is doing lots of "Thatcher supports Bolton" today.  Wink
