In terms of the history books, there has always been a general consensus that every President between Jackson and Lincoln was either mediocre or a failure. Yet in recent years, of those Presidents, James K. Polk has undergone something of a 'comeback' in a sense, in that his Presidency is being re-evaluated as a success, marking him as the one great President between Jackson and Lincoln.

What do you guys think? Is James Polk generally underrated, or was he medicore?

No. Polk was an imperialist who appeased slave owners.

I think he was a success in the context of his time, and I thought he'd always been rated highly.

No, he's often considered the best one-term president.

Actually, the OP couldn't be more wrong in his assessment of how Polk has been viewed.  He's traditionally been ranked as one of the better presidents, usually at the bottom of the top quartile or the top of the second quartile.  His reputation has taken a dive in the last few surveys, but it remains to be seen if that's anything more than a statistical blip. He consistently rates as one of the best Presidents to serve a single term, with only Kennedy marginally better in the rankings. It's a shame ill health kept him from reconsidering his single term pledge. It would have been interesting to see how he dealt with the results of his war.

Most people pretty inexplicably rank him significantly higher than Buchanan and Pierce, so obvobviously not.

Only if you find waging wars to expand the potential amount of land to be held for the purposes of human bondage is 'underrated'
