Also, it was outrageously arbitrary execution. There were 49 U.S. soldiers sentenced to death for desertion, but every one of them, except Slovik, got their sentence commuted. And Slovik was nowhere near the most severe case.

On the other hand, desertion had become a systemic problem in France during the German offensive through the Ardennes, so the command wanted a clear message to discourage deserters and Slovik was the unlucky one to be in the line. Still, extremely random.
