Clarence is probably the kindest poster on this forum.  And a proud vet.

PO2 USN myself. Any other Navy on the forum? Vets of other branches? Would love to talk shop with some fellow brothers and sisters.

I was a Machinist Mate stationed out in San Diego.  How's it treating ya?

Mike Naso likes to play with toy fighter jets and President Bush in Uniform (Limited Edition™) dolls action figures. He might count.

Pretty good so far, at NBSD as well. Did the last bit of frigate life and about to go on to an LHD. Looking forward to the change of pace.

Hope you enjoy it more than I did, good sir.

Tbf to Naso he eagerly signed up and was discharged for a heart condition.  So he definitely counts.  But the rest of your post is still true Tongue

I do recall this from about four or five years ago now.

One of the things that occurs now both because of the less mapower intensive nature of the military today and the advances in medical screenings, is that they only take the best and turn away many with medical conditions. It is not like in the old days when you just signed up everybody of age in town for Company b of the 40th Ohio and then those with said conditions ended up dying on the march when it got too hot. This is an improvement, though it does mean that several people eager to sign up, are not able to fullfill their dreams.

To be fair, not every heart defect will lead to death, even on marches.

That is true, but as long as the military is not desperate for manpower then it will not be willing to take the risk.

Not a vet myself, but my brother served (as well as my father) which makes me somewhat more understanding of what those who serve have to put up with both during and after their service than most people these days when relatively few serve.
