Liberal

1. Vermont - Mass. without large social conservative pockets
2. Massachusetts - It's Massachusetts!
3. Rhode Island - Mass. but slightly more pro-life

The above 3 states clearly stand out as extremely liberal.

4. Hawaii - In a world of its own. Shouldn't even be part of U.S.
5. Washington - It's true, Western progressivism is more progressive than eastern progressivism

Why did I not include:
1. New York: Heavy ethnic/urban vote does not necessarily = liberal
2. California: Ditto to NY with regard to L.A. Also, too many people think just of L.A. and the Bay Area. They forget the rest of Southern California & the Central Valley. More people voted for Bush in California than in Texas. Also, a state where draconian property tax limits are untouchable politically is not that liberal.

Conservative

1. Utah - Mormon Central
2. Mississippi - Eliminate black vote and GOP % is MUCH higher
3. Alabama - Ditto. The stage of Roy Moore, but not AS southern as Mississippi. Ask Harry, when he gets out of jail.
4. Oklahoma - This is Texas without the metropolises. Combines southern & western conservatism. State of the Oklahoma City bombing. Easily elected Tom Coburn.
5. South Carolina - ditto to Mississippi. Easily elected Jim DeMint.

Why did I not include

1. Nebraska - probably #6
2. Idaho - Not Mormon enough, and has a slight libertarian streak.
3. Wyoming - Ditto.
4. Kansas - was pro-choice until 1991! Read Thomas Frank's book.
