The presidency of Theodore Roosevelt has been unlike any the country has ever seen, and while the former cattle rancher from South Dakota is hardly as radical as Bryan or Stanton, his actions to bust the most excessive Trusts and to conserve the nation's natural resources against unchecked capitalistic exploitation have earned him the hatred of many industrialists. Determined to give every American a "fair deal", Roosevelt has sought to curb the most offensive excesses of a hitherto unregulated economy, supporting legislation to tighten regulation of the meat packing industry (among others) and successfully prosecuting those Trusts whose monopolistic domination of the markets threaten the overall health of the economy. Roosevelt has also sought increased protections for the rights of laborers to organize, though Populists such as Eugene V. Debs argue that such measures are too little, too late.

Having announced his intention to seek a second term in 1908, Roosevelt is opposed both by Congressman Charles Fairbanks, who represents the conservative wing of his party, and Mr. Eugene Chaffin, who feels the president has not done enough to enforce Prohibition, at the American National Convention. The Populists, meanwhile, head towards a two-way race between former presidential nominees William J. Bryan (who served as president from 1897 to 1901) and Eugene V. Debs. Generally speaking, Bryan represents the traditional agricultural wing of the party, while Debs is the spokesman for the growing labor movement within the party. Senator Caldwell Edwards of Montana has also entered the race, hoping to be chosen as a "compromise" candidate should the Bryan and Debs factions prove unable to come to an agreement. Finally, the Democrats face a field of several (mostly conservative) figures who oppose both Roosevelt and the Populists and seek to return to the policies of Grover Cleveland.

With all three conventions having drawn to a close, a rematch between President Roosevelt and Congressman Debs is in the offing, with Champ Clark representing the embattled Democratic Party.
