If you were obliged to join the United States Armed Forces, which service would you choose?

This is going to sound very ignorant, but maybe some Forumites know this:

When the draft was still in effect, did those who were drafted get to choose which branch of the armed forces they joined? Were they randomly assigned to one? Did the draft board make that decision for them?

I've heard anecdotes about how some people voluntarily enlisted because they had a low draft number, knew the likelihood they'd get picked was high anyway, and would have more options available if they voluntarily enlisted. No war veterans in my family apart from my grandfather's estranged father doing a brief stint in the Navy during WWII (volunteered, not drafted).

I'm pretty sure that the Marines didn't take draftees. As to the army and navy I'm not sure but my guess is that you'd have had more leeway during peacetime.

1. try to seek political asylum in, say, Cuba

2. hide & hope. my mother and father would likely be sympathetic and give me cash so I could live as a paper ghost

3. should the knock on the door come, suicide.

Well I was assuming this would be in peacetime. During wartime I'd definitely try to find a shrink that would write a note on my behalf getting me declared 4-F.

I was just about to post this music video, but I considered it in the end too disrespectful towards the U.S. Armed Forces. Tongue

Well, if being a teacher doesn't get me out of the draft, I'll likely flee the country.

Navy. Seems safest as we seem to just go to war with desert nations now.
