If so, how would his extremist anti-condom opinions hurt him?

Yes, and no one will bring up condoms.

If they go with a freshman senator, it will be Ernst.

I don't see why they'd pluck him out of the Senate so early, taking an incumbent out of a Tossup/Lean Blue state and allowing them to be replaced by a Democrat.

GOP isn't going to give up a Senate seat that will be filled by the Democratic governor of Colorado.

Ernst would draw too many Palin comparisons.

It's possible since Gardner is a swing state Senator, and considered politically talented.

There could be a few inexperience arguments. Ernst and Cotton have also developed higher profiles in the class of 2014.

I don't see why they'd pluck him out of the Senate so early, taking an incumbent out of a Tossup/Lean Blue state and allowing them to be replaced by a Democrat.
They'd be happy with that sacrifice, since it means the ticket won.

Why would a guy who's been in the Senate for two years and is known by many for wanting to ban condoms (whether this is true or not) bring about a Republican victory?

Nobody elected statewide for the first time in 2014 will be on the ticket.

If so, how would his extremist anti-condom opinions hurt him?

Ask Senator Udall how that argument worked.

Ask President Romney how the out-of-touch criticisms lobbed at him in 2002 still totally somehow didn't affect him at all in 2012.

A national smear campaign's brutality compared to a mere statewide race should not be underestimated.

He could but if the senate is close like it seems it will be, the GOP risks losing the seat with Hickenlooper appointing a replacement.

Huh If Gardner doesn't want people to bring condoms up, why did he want to ban them??

I highly doubt the Republican nominee is going to pick a senator elected for the first time last year. Overall, their lack of experience (among other things) would be a drag on the ticket. Before people bring up Obama, there's a big difference between a year and a half and three and a half years.

Gardner's anti-condom agenda won't be able to slip under the radar with the scrutiny of a national campaign.
