Always torn

+Civil rights, civil rights and civil rights. Passed the majority of powerful civil right legislation.
+Big society was a worthy cause, and much needed
+His role in the senate, and general character has to be admired

-Vietnam, become obsessed with the war, and appears to of let his personal failings to overcome his political skills
-went a bit power crazy towards the end.

This is how I thought of it, but the bottom two are just that bad.

B+, would have been a solid A without Vietnam.

A+ Economics
A - Social Policy
F Foreign Policy

Final Grade: C+ because of Vietnam, he got literally nothing right with foreign policy (Still better than pretty much all of them except Carter in the past 50 years)

Lyndon Johnson's role in the senate is much overblown, and creates absolutely unrealistic expectations on how the executive or senate leadership are supposed to be able to extract their policy preferences from the Committee of 100 by force of will alone.  It doesn't work that way

A- for domestic policy
C for foreign policy
Bonus points for realizing that he shouldn't run for re-election
Negative points for failing to replace Earl Warren

I'll give him a B+ overall

I kind of owe my existence to his Presidency, so A+! Smiley

No, seriously: solid B. Vietnam is a drag, but really overrated compared to what the Civil Rights Acts and Great Society did for this country.
