Was it inevitable, or could the first half of his term have been handled better?

Perhaps not make any attempt to pass health care reform?

1. Not enact NAFTA
2. Not half-ass health insurance reform
3. Not half-ass allowing gays to serve openly in the military
4. Actual stimulus package
5. Do something else to turn out Democratic voters

i.e., he'd have to not be Bill Clinton, so there's really no way of preventing it

Yes, clearly the 90s were hungering for a left wing leader.

At least before the 90s, the Democratic Party had many true progressives. (i.e. had a soul that they have only recently began to regain from the damage of the Clinton/Gore years)

Also a time during which they did much better with Southern Whites, detracting credence from the notion that the old Southern Dems were right wingers.

Not be a Democrat, as this was when the opposition party truly did start reflexively opposing everything that the party in power did.

Or rather pass obamacare when it was still Gingrichcare.
