The year is 1828. President John Q. Adams has conducted his administration largely in the tradition of John Marshall, supporting internal improvements, signing a new tariff into law, and more or less maintaining the Bank of the United States. More than any of his predecessors, Adams has sought to further pursuit of the arts and sciences, constructing the nation's first astronomical observatory and encouraging efforts to expand educational opportunities to all Americans. Nevertheless, the president's reserved demeanor has raised charges of elitism, and his general stubbornness, a trait shared by his father's cousin, former President Samuel Adams, has won him several powerful enemies in Congress.
Adam's term has also seen the rise of a new party system. Supporters of the president and Secretary of State Henry Clay, calling themselves "National Republicans", are generally supportive of efforts to strengthen the federal government, protect commerce, and build the nation's infrastructure. Their opponents, made up of former supporters of William H. Crawford, are calling themselves "Democrats", and are more inclined to back measures that strengthen states' rights and agrarian interests. Unlike the old party system, born out of competition within Congress, these new parties are grass roots organizations, with the result that they more directly reflect the will of their constituents, but also vary significantly from state to state.
With Henry Clay's refusal to challenge Adams for the National Republican nomination, the president was renominated enthusiastically by various state legislatures around the country. The choice for Adams' running mate remains up in the air, however, with cabinet members Richard Rush and William Wirt and Senator William H. Harrison being the primary contenders for the nomination. The Democrats, on the other hand, are much less organized, with William Crawford's retirement having left them without a clear leader. Among those contending to be the first candidate of the new party are Vice President Andrew Jackson, Senator Martin Van Buren, and Senator John C. Calhoun, all of whom made significant contributions to organizing the party.

On second thought, since nobody has voted in a while, I'll go ahead and close it down now. The general election will be Adams/ Wirt vs. Van Buren/ Jackson. Onward!
