So gay marriage is obviously already legal in Illinois, but this is an interesting question I think, and so I wanted to pose it. Were Illinois to hold a marriage referendum, I think it is clear that Cook County would be pro 60+% and Lake and Will Counties would be pro in the 50's. Exurban collars McHenry and Kendall would (maybe?) be anti in the 40's or 50's. DeKalb would be pro. Downstate would be heavily anti with spots of heavily pro in collegiate counties.

DuPage is an interesting case, though. It is a loyally Republican county that has switched for Obama two cycles in a row. It is relatively wealthy and fiscally conservative. On religion, there are some areas which are very religious and others which are not. It is very white.

If we look at a similar referendum in Minnesota, we saw wealthy, Republican-leaning counties going pro-gay marriage. I am wondering if DuPage would be a good candidate for this or if traditionally religious areas in the county would hold it back.

I lean toward the idea that it would go pro-gay marriage because of it being suburban Chicago, known for its fiscal conservative/social liberals. Also, its switch to Obama shows its independent potential on issues seen as right-fringe.

I definitely think it would go pro-gay, however like you said not the margin of Will or Lake. Most DuPagers may be Republican, but they're the moderate type who are socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

Frederick County, Maryland and Scott County, Minnesota voted pro-SSM in 2012.  I'm pretty sure DuPage would today.

Jefferson and Fayette counties in Kentucky probably would.

Although it does have some very religious areas such as Wheaton.

Yes, it probably wouldn't be close either. I think I stated in the Minnesota gay marriage thread that suburban (especially wealthy and educated) Republican areas are more pro-gay marriage than rural Democratic areas.

Utah will be in favor of SSM soon. This issue is just so over. Smiley
