What had promised to be an uneventful campaign quickly became one of the most contentious elections in the history of the American Republic when the Democratic-Republican caucus rejected incumbent President DeWitt Clinton and instead nominated Virginia’s John Randolph as the party’s candidate for president in 1820. The victory of the “Old Guard” Republicans, who considered Clinton a closet Federalist and admired Randolph’s commitment to the states’ rights doctrine of Samuel Adams, sent tremors through the political establishment, with none certain where this new development will lead.
While some men might have stepped quietly to the side after such a rejection, President Clinton has refused to go without a fight. Lacking the strength or organization to field a candidate of their own, the remains of the Federalist Party have formed a coalition with moderate Republicans to nominate Clinton for a second term. While some regard this as sacrilege to the memory of Alexander Hamilton, moderates within the party have pointed out that the majority of Clinton’s policies have upheld their party’s nationalist vision, and in a show of good faith former Secretary of State Rufus King has agreed to be Clinton’s running mate. Freed from his dependence on Southern votes, President Clinton is proposing an ambitious agenda for his second term: expanded internal improvements, a new tariff to foster industrial development, and support for westward expansion. Clinton’s platform is also tacitly anti-slavery, in hopes of capitalizing on the sentiments aroused by the Missouri controversy. Randolph, meanwhile, is running on a traditional Adamsian platform of states’ rights, limited government, and an end to the National Bank. He has chosen Congressman Andrew Jackson, a minor military hero from Tennessee, as his running mate, hoping to sway the western vote in his favor.
Will America embrace the nationalism of Clinton’s “American System” or reaffirm its commitment to the ideals of Samuel Adams? You have two days.

This is shaping up to be the closest election since 1812. It seems having Rufus King as the Federalist VP nominee is a guarantee for a nail biter.

Also, FYI: if Clinton and Randolph tie, the unpledged electors will throw their support behind Clinton.

President DeWitt Clinton (Independent-New York)/ Fmr. Secretary of State Rufus King (Federalist-Massachusetts): 124 Electoral Votes; 43.5% popular votes
Congressman John Randolph (Democratic-Republican-Virginia)/ Congressman Andrew Jackson (Democratic-Republican-Tennessee): 107 Electoral Votes; 43.5% popular votes

Rejected by his own party's Congressional caucus, DeWitt Clinton turned to the dying Federalist Party for support as he launched his campaign for a second term. With former Secretary of State Rufus King as his running mate, Clinton campaigned aggressively against Democratic-Republican nominee John Randolph, casting the Virginian Congressman as a radical and a puppet of the slave power. The president might nevertheless have gone down to defeat had it not been for 15 unpledged Federalist electors from Massachusetts, who at the last minute voted for Clinton out of disgust for Randolph's support for nullification. Thus, Clinton was reelected, though hardly with an impressive mandate, his popular margin over Randolph being less than 200 votes.
