As the first Virginian Federalist since Washington to hold the nation's highest office, President Marshall and his administration drew many comparisons to the revered chief executive. On the international front, Marshall and Secretary of State Rufus King have managed to diffuse tensions with Britain, to the relief of New England merchants and the dismay of Western expansionists. On the domestic front, the president has rechartered the National Bank and established a program of internal improvements in the West.
As the Federalist Caucus of 1816 assembles to choose the party's candidate for president, Marshall is virtually assured the nomination, opposed only by obscure Maryland Senator John Eager Howard. The real fight is in the Democratic-Republican camp, where a myriad of candidate is seeking the nomination in the absence of a clear front runner. While Congressman Henry Clay is seen as the most likely candidate to get the nod, several other notables and favorite sons are also in contention.

Vice President DeWitt Clinton has won a narrow victory over Pennsylvania Governor Simon Snyder, while President Marshall was renominated easily by the Federalists. On to the general election!

Thanks. All these "M"s (Madison, Marshall, Monroe, Nathaniel Macon) are driving me crazy!
