Tennessee Senator Al Gore wins the democratic nomination for president in 1988. Gore picks Michigan Governor James Blanchard as his choice for Vice President. Republicans pick Vice President George H.W Bush of Texas and Senator Dan Quayle of Indiana for President and Vice President. Who wins?, maps are appreciated.

Bush would NOT win California in this scenario and only won against Dukakis on the "elitist"/"soft on crime" card. But Gore still would have an appeal with the minorities in the Central Valley and would definitely take enough of the coast beyond the Northwest and Bay Area.

That same appeal would give him Ohio as well against someone like HW.

Ohio going Democrat is doubtful after 8 years of Reagan. Gore could appeal to the Southeast but doesn't have anything special to offer for the rest of the state. He's not that great a campaigner.  California could go to Gore, but it's not a sure thing, as the GOP has some strength in the state. CA sent Wilson back to the Senate that year by 9 points, while just two years earlier nearly replaced Cranston with a relative unknown.
