That's too bad. Sounds like she was still active in her career and 70 feels too young.

She was honestly the best. RR1997 and I were commenting on how we wanted to adopt her as our grandmas because of her victory speech in November (http://cltv.com/2014/11/04/republican-judy-baar-topinka-win-second-term-as-comptroller/). She was a real character, and had amazing energy despite being 70. Really shocking that she went out so soon like that.

Terrible news to wake up to this morning. She truly had the respect of Illinois Democrats and Republicans alike. This is a tough state for Republicans to win in, and she did. Many times. Her support of gay marriage last year was indicative of her career - she didn't bow to anyone, her party or in a different party. She was her own politician, and people loved her for that.

RIP to an Illinois political giant and a true trailblazer. There will never be another like her personality, and how few and far between her politics seem to be nowadays as well.

This is quite sad. She certainly was an interesting and colorful personality-my favorite type. And she was also, of course, a great Republican.

So is there going to be a special election, or would Governor Quinn (or Rauner) appoint someone?

How sad that she didn't even get a chance to get indicted. Every experienced Illinois politician should get that chance.

So is there going to be a special election, or would Governor Quinn (or Rauner) appoint someone?

The current thinking is that Quinn appoints someone until Jan 12 and Rauner appoints some one to fill the new term. Lawyers are plowing through untested statutes to figure it out. A special election presumably requires the GA to come back into special session to create that option, and presumably it would be before Rauner is sworn in.
