Too bad. I wish she would wait until 2018 instead.

Can't beat Harris, but maybe we'll get someone more liberal for her House seat.

That's true, but I like Loretta Sanchez personally, and I wish that she wouldn't just lose the 2016 primary and become a lobbyist, which is what appears is going to happen if things go as they are. My dad is a retired firefighter from Garden Grove, and she used to come around to the fire stations and union events, and my family and I all really like her.

She should run for Feinstein's seat in 2018. In the Senate she'd be forced to take more liberal votes, unlike the House where her vote doesn't count as much (especially in the minority) and she votes like she's from Bera or Peters' districts.

Sanchez can just run again in 2018 if she loses in 2016. Feinstein is almost certainly not going to run again, and even if she does there will still be the open governor's seat if that's the sort of thing Sanchez would be interested in.

I know you dems like to fantasize about the whole party standing aside for Harris out of fear of the R vs R possibility, but that's just not how things work when an opportunity to move up to the senate comes up for the first time in over 20 years in a gigantic state. This was always going to be a contested primary, Harris was never going to be able to scare away all of the 40+ possibilities listed by wikipedia.

I prefer Sanchez to Harris, to be honest. Would her strong Hispanic base not at least assure her a spot in the top two?

No, there are likely too many Republican voters to end up with a Democratic top two, unless a hoard of no name Republicans run.

No, she was pretty conservative (not a Parker Griffith, but still). However, that was when here district was a lot more competitive than it is today. She's flip-flopped on several issues and looks like a generic Dem now.

She has a track record of being a lone wolf in the CA Dem party and making decisions that don't make sense to outsiders. This is quixotic.

Orange County Democrats tend to be more conservative than Democrats from other regions of California, so most of the contenders to replace Sanchez would be ideologically similar. Reliably Democratic PVI's aren't necessarily that progressive.

As for running for Senate, Sanchez could just use a run now as experience for when Feinstein retires. Running statewide is difficult, so a dry run doesn't hurt much.

Agree. But even Parker Griffith wasn't (IMHO) the most conservative even among contemporary Blue Dogs. And absolutely incomparable with Blue Dogs of relatively recent past (Boll Weevils), who included such persons as Larry McDonald, Phil Gramm and Bob Stump (all - Democrats!).

The latter of the two you mentioned became Republicans and stayed that way. Larry McDonald isn't really contemporary, too.

But still, that's true. Harold Ford Jr. was pretty conservative too.

Of course - not contemporary. I simply wanted to stress that those called "conservative Blue Dogs" or simply "conservaDems" now would be considered very moderate about 30 years ago. Then really conservative Democrats REALLY existed. Now you will be hard=pressed to find similar Democrats even in state legislatures (even in Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas, which still have some "conservatively inclined" Democratic legislators)

Larry McDonald was listed 2nd to only Ron Paul as the most right-wing member of Congress during a 75 year period, so of course he's more conservative than every other Democrat.

Can you imagine Democrat similar to McDonald  NOW? Even, say, in Mississippi's state legislature? I can't. And in his time there were dozens, if not hundreds, Democrats like him in state legislatures..

Del Beccaro is in... and apparently the other Republican running Rocky Chavez, only had $5,000 in the bank at the end of the last quarter.

If no other Republicans enter, Del Becaro should be almost certain of a spot in the top two, right?

Laura Capps won't run for her moms seat

Republicans have a non-joke candidate here too, so look out for this one now.

Both the Democrats currently in the race are arguably stronger than Capps would have been, Salud Carbajal especially. This just makes it less likely for two Republicans to slip into the general.
