Two contrasting visions of the Irish state pushed by the same political party:

the tremendously twee and traditionalist vision of a small "c" conservative land of the Church, isolated from the horrors of the modern world and progress,

or

a materialist consumer boom, built entirely on selling property to each other and indebting oneself in worthless get-rich-quick schemes.

Which was less insufferable?

Of course the Celtic tiger was a fantastic vision, while the dreamed-of Ireland was a terrifying place.

The Ireland We Dreamed Of in a less patriarchal version (which would have been hard to accomplish, but still..). Respect for art, tradition and the spiritual dimension of life are fundamentally good values. Celtic Tiger is soulless materialism, the idea of society as a "growth machine" and quality of life soley based on consumption is awful.

Considering the cultural cringe of both of those things by our residential Irish posters, I'd say neither.

If forced to choose... Celtic tiger.  Nobody cares about religious fervor when the only thing driving it is deprivation of nearly everything else good and wholesome.
