Despite the unfortunate name, crappie.  If I were the type to take up fishing, they are what I'd fish for.

Surprised some seafood marketing people haven't seized on the more appealing names.

I mean there is a reason we don't use rapeseed oil.

They don't tend to congregate together so that makes fishing for them commercially instead of recreationally not a very viable option, tho it has been tried from time to time.

I like swordfish, though finding truly fresh seafood in Memphis can be a challenge. Can't believe people are saying catfish, the Ford Pinto of the seafood counter.

If I were to become a full-fledged vegetarian, the only meat that I would be challenged to not make an exception for is fried catfish.

Do you mean pickled, ingemann?  Not ripe?

Ripe fruit is delicious.  Ripe cheese can be delicious.  Ripe meat or fish is never delicious, unless you're Gustaf and enjoy surströmming.

Probably malted herring based on his description.

Yes through why is there green... "things" on that picture.

Salmon will always be my favorite.  But grouper and hogfish are pretty grand, as is walleye of course.  I just love fish in general.  Seafood is great!

There must be some translation issue here with the Scandinavians. In English this is called "pickled herring". A Google search for "malted herring" returns a bunch of nonsense.

Yeah... Ripe and malted are not words associated with any kind of edible meat.

It is pickled herring.  I thought maybe they were referring to a different preparation, since the stinkfish loving Viking children are wont to soak their fish in lye or simpky let it rot for a bit before enjoying.  Or even burying it in a hole for months before hanging it in an open barn for a few more... Like a terrible Icelandic twist on kimchi.

My grandpa always used to wolf down a decent pile of pickled herring every time we went anywhere with a salad bar.  Along with pickled beets and peaches with cottage cheese... Mmm what a combo.

Just garnish, ingemann... Nobody is trying to sneak any veggies in without you knowing.  Though the dill on the fish can only make it better.

The old (and now mostly gone) generation of Jewish people loved pickled herring as well. It will always remind me of my grandmother. I like it ok, but apparently not enough to ever buy it. It's been years since I've had it. I've never seen it on a salad bar. Come to think of it, I've never seen it in a non-Jewish context. Down here, they put it in the kosher section of the supermarket. Not many Scandinavians in Memphis Tongue

There is a decent homegrown pickled herring industry in MN...though they operate mostly around this time of year.

Pickled herring is a part of the melting pot culture here since the Germans and Jews like it too.  Between Scandinavians and Germans, you've got 2/3 or more of the population in most of MN.

But since we're far from the ocean, it was seen as a treat... And popular because it keeps well and can be shipped.

Still, walleye has become our cod and pickled northern pike our natuve replacement for herring.

I've only started eating fish (and beef) recently, and I am fairly rigorous when it comes to selection:

1. Wild caught only, and nowhere near China or Japan
2. Live in cold salt water
3. Not endangered or over-harvested

That eliminates a great many species from that list. In practice I only eat canned Alaska salmon ("pink" usually, the "red" is outside my budget) and Alaska whiting. Sure, Alaska is too close to Japan for my liking, but there aren't any better alternatives here.

Atlantic cod has been over-harvested but Alaskan and of course Icelandic have not as of yet.......very yummy.

* fried Shrimps (@ McDonalds, but they are expensive: 5 of them for 6.50$)

* Canned herring in tomato sauce

* Pangasius catfish (fried)

* salmon (as spread for bread)

* tuna (on pizza)

The McDonalds shrimps are simply delicious (incl. cocktail sauce).

But it looks like they have to import them from Thailand, so that's why they are so expensive (I still often buy 10 for 13$, or 10€ - because McD only offers them for a short time and then some months go by without).

Does the US McD offer them as well ?

No shrimp at McDonalds here.

I like shrimp cocktail.  Just for the cocktail sauce.  I would eat shoe leather dipped in cocktail sauce.  The red kind with horseradish...

Besides the last two weeks historically my family always has fish on sundays besides Christmas and the Super Bowl.

For some reason my mom always has a hard on for Flounder but it's okay I guess. She hates Whiting but i love it due to it's fishy taste as well as the skin you could eat.

Salmon's a rarity but it's good.
