The Republicans went out of their way to offend Hispanic voters with their immigration stance in 2012. It wasn't just what they said; it was how they said it.
An intelligent discussion of immigration criteria, of the need to better assimilate Hispanic immigrants, would not have offended Hispanic voters. A reasonable discussion of the Dream Act (which affects people who know nothing but life in America), of allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver licenses (so they can be insures if they are in an accident) and that their kids attend public school (so we don't have groups of kids growing up in America not attending school but not being deported) would not have offended Hispanic voters, even when the more conservative positions were taken. But to hear a Presidential candidate talking about people "self-deporting", of the refusal to even discuss legislative reforms, of the GOP minions whipping up resentment over having to Press "1" for English, etc. served no purpose but to alienate Hispanic voters.
