Well?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Labor_Party#Factions

Also, how would the Democrats look divided intp ALP type factions? Would Progressive Left and Democratic Unity be enough, or would a progressive/moderate/blue dog split be needed?

The factions are stupid and should be abolished (normal)

But because it's the more powerful faction, Unity have a lot more vacuous morons and/or corrupt deadwood - Bullock, Farrell, Obeid etc.

The decision to formalise factions was... an error. An understandable one given the context, but still a mistake. Of course people often talk in terms of subfactions now...

They're pretty weak now, but I think there would have to be a Blue Dog faction at some point. Do you really think Zell Miller would fit in an ALP faction?

Obviously Labour Unity.
I think the Democrats would be
-Progressives
-Radicals
-Labor
-Leftist Christians
-Nationalists (Anti Free Trade people)
-Moderate Liberals
-Fisccal Conservatives
-GeoLibertarians

Do Labor members have to be in a faction? Or can they remain unaffiliated?

Unless you are from Canberra, where a strong Independent movement is still lives, it is virtually impossible to achieve any position of power within the party or in public office unless you are a member of a faction. Most seats are carved up and assigned to one of the two factions and their many union subfactions. This stops liberal lefty athiests from gaining the power.

I think Kevin Rudd was not officially in a faction. He is associated with Peter Beattie, who is a a Right member, but Rudd himself could not be bound by petty factions.

Also Peter Garret was factionless. Which suggests being free of factions is not a mark of excellence.

Kevin Rudd was a member of the Centre Unity Faction in Queensland which still exists.
