Like his predecessors, Jackson adhered to Washington's two term precedent. The race to succeed him was contentious with both Vice-President Calhoun and Secretary of State Van Buren seeking the nod. Seeing Van Buren as self-made compared to the aristocratic Calhoun, Jackson interceded on behalf of the Secretary of State, largely to the dismay of Calhoun, who now sought to rehabilitate his political career by returning to South Carolina politics.

With the Federalist Party in decline, their remnants have reluctantly decided to back National Republican candidate Henry Clay, who they perceive as best able to beat the Democrats. Also running is William Wirt, a former Republican Mason running under the Anti-Masonic banner with substantial support from High Federalists.

Van Buren decisively wins every state in the Union. Opposition parties collapse under the down-ballot coattails for Democrats.
