Ron Paul received 2,107,066 votes in the 2012 primary elections.
Will his son do better than him?

This goes without saying.

This is more or less asking if he'll finish in the top 3.

Probably.

It actually doesn't go with out saying.

On the one hand, Rand Paul is a more credible candidate for President than his dad ever was. He has a more conventional background (50-something Senator) and has cultivated a high profile pretty well.

But 2016 will be a different environment. He might drop out of a presidential bid early to run for reelection as Senator. In a crowded primary, he would be unlikely to get many protest votes the way his dad did.

Obviously. The question should be 'Will Rand Paul win the GOP primaries?".

I actually agree with this.

Let's say both Ron and Rand are on the ballot in the Iowa Caucuses and work from there maybe?

He's made it pretty clear.

I'm not so sure.  Didn't Ron stay in until the very end?  If Rand drops out before Super Tuesday, then I think he'll fall short.

Exactly. Not forgetting that Rand Paul, like his father, is a caucus candidate. He will do very well in caucuses, but they don't provide as many votes as the primaries, where Rand will perform below-average.

At the latest when the Kentucky primary is about to happen he will have to drop out in order not to squander his U.S. Senate seat.

Whatever you think about Dr Ron Paul, I highly doubt he's sufficiently dickish to attempt to upstage his own son.

I give it about a 70-80% chance. Republicans usually settle for an establishmentarian with a slight streak of something else....but not a 50/50 mix of libertarian and old school Republican like Paul is...well his dad was more 40/60 and he is more 60/40.

He will get more votes in the earlier states but I suspect he will be out by Super Tuesday so he wont get more total votes. He wants to build his cred with the establishment so he wont hang on to the end with a quixotic campaign like his dad.

This is good to hear since your senate predictions were nearly spot-on
