Nothing different from what happened in the rest of the country. The GOP did well overall and thus swept swing States.

I think Colorado shows the problems Democrats have with non-black minorities. They just aren't going to line up and vote for them no matter what, unlike blacks. If hispanics and asians decide to not vote in a presidential year, like they did this year, then winning the presidency becomes much harder. Especially if blacks go back to voting 90-10 as opposed to 95-5 for Obama.

Of course they will. I'd say even 89-11. Even Colin Powell voted for Obama. But he won't vote for Hillary.

We dont need CO in 2016, but it will nice to have, road goes through OH. But, the personhood amendment got Udall off message and instead of talking about kitchen table issues.

It was a turnout problem (which is sad since all mail-in ballots were supposed to help prevent that).

Udall actually managed to flip Arapahoe and Adams to his column and he only lost Jefferson by 1,000 votes. That means the suburbs weren't his problem. (Well, they were in the sense there was erosion in them but they didn't cost him the election)

He lost Pueblo which indicates Hispanics not voting. But more importantly, the GOP strongholds destroyed the Dem strongholds in total number of votes. A good comparison in Colorado is Denver vs El Paso counties (Denver vs Colorado Springs, battle of the strongholds).

Both in 2010 and 2012, total turnout in those two counties was about the same (El Paso barely won in 2010 while Denver barely won in 2012. But for all intents and purposes, they were tied).

El Paso beat Denver by over 20k votes yesterday.

Another big rivalry in Colorado is the second in command of each party which is Boulder County vs Douglas County. Again, in 2010 and 2012 they were about tied, negating each other. But yesterday? Douglas County beat Boulder County (which it didn't even do in 2010).

So yeah, appealing to moderates/independents wasn't the problem here as much as it was turnout.

It appears that Democrats actually kept the State House and probably only lost the Senate by one seat. It still seems that Democrats are probably in pretty good shape here than compared to other purple states.

In the end, Hickenlooper probably wins by a larger margin than Gardner. Udall, who ran an awful campaign, will only barely lost to the best Republican candidate of 2014. It looks like Colorado is still a Lean D state, especially with higher Hispanic turnout in presidential years.

If anything, this shows where Democrats need to expand their Bannock Street operation to. They did well in Boulder, Denver, Aurora and even Ft. Collins. Not so much in Pueblo and the Sagre Del Christos.

It appears Udall only lost by around 2 points this race was clearly salvageable if he had just ran a better campaign.

Only lost Jefferson County by 120 votes.

Colorado's a swing state (not purple-blue like MI, not purple-red like MT, but pure purple), Udall ran a terrible campaign focused on only one issue, and Gardner was an excellent candidate who will be a great Senator. Had it been Scott Gessler facing Hick instead of Beauprez, that race would have gone to the republicans as well.

^ Read Lief's post from the CO thread. WOW is what kept Udall close, per his campaign. GOP says it led to a backlash. As for the OP, Gardner happened.

If Colorado were a pure purple swing state, and Udall ran a terrible campaign and Gardner ran an excellent one, Gardner would have won by more than 2.5% IMO. Iowa is a better example of a pure swing state, especially because of its demographics (white working class) compared to Colorado's.

What state is Colorado most like then?

I'm not sure. It's not as Democratic as states like Michigan, but it's much, much more polarized than a state like Michigan. Democrats seem to have a very high floor in the state.

Californians made CO a purple state.  Maybe time to make them move out?
