I just found some interesting ones

Alachua County, FL went for Al Smith but a combined 62% of voters voted for the Socialist and Communist Party candidates. Alachua then went on to go for Strom Thurmond in 1948. (Did Alachua have a Socialist/Communist enclave? or did they just not like Al Smith that much?)

Miami-Dade gave 30% to the Prohibition Party in 1924

How about with the Libertarians? or the Constitution party (George co. MS?)? Natural Law is Jefferson co. IA

and the Socialists did win counties in Minnesota in 1912

I think Al Smith was the first Catholic to ever be nominated for president and that hurt him badly. Maybe it was their way of saying that Catholics are worse than communists.

Okay.

1860 is a great place for this - North Carolina especially was full of these results. John Bell got 93% in Stanly County, while Breckenridge broke 90 percent in  the counties of Nash (93%), Duplin (90.08%) and Currituck (90.06%). Talk about polarization.

Why?
His running mate, Frank Hemenway, was from the state.
