I'm stuck in a Trotskyist cult convergence in some suburb of Chicago. Planning on melting into the city tomorrow, looking for stuff to do. Thoughts?

Ooh, Trots. What convergence, if I might ask?

I would definitely suggest checking out all the typical tourist-y stuff. Navy Pier, Sears Tower (now referred to as "Willis" Tower), the various museums are great (although pretty expensive if memory serves), and I really enjoyed going up to the top of the John Hancock building for drinks the first time I went. Another thing worth doing if you're into left-wing politics would be checking out the Haymarket memorial and the cemetery that has the Haymarket martyrs, Emma Goldman, and all those other dead reds buried in it. I haven't done that yet (for shame!) but I plan on it at some point.

Thanks for those. I have no idea what the typical touristy stuff to do in Chicago is. It's an ISO conference. The people are nice but, I feel like the cult label really does apply. But, it's an incredibly cheap vacation to Chicago, and they've got us staying in a Crowne Plaza hotel. Can't complain there.

Which Crowne Plaza are you at and when do you depart. I'm local and can make a host of recommendations.

Visit that giant ball mirror thing in the Millennium Park if it's still there.

Literally what we do.

It will make all the touristy stuff even more fun. Smiley Definitely spend some time in Millennium Park and on Navy Pier. Don't eat downtown, though. The best food is in the neighborhoods.

Actually if you have the advantage of an expense account but lack mobility near downtown, the best eating is probably in the West Loop. It's where upcoming chefs tend to go to establish themselves in the refurbished warehouses along Randolph and nearby blocks.
