IIRC, Mexican-Americans voted in droves for Republicans in each election up until Nixon. What do you think ticked them off? (or who?)

Before Nixon the numbers of voters must have been pretty small outside of New Mexico and parts of California and Texas.

Yeah, and even in the 60's the Kennedys were heavily supported by Mexicans (especially Bobby).

Mexican Americans have been reliably Democratic since the Civil War.  Granted, turnout was abysmal (and is still poor), but there has never been any significant pocket of support for the Republicans among Mexican Americans.

I think they had become reliably Democrat by the time Jerry Brown was elected governor....

The first time. With the help of Cesar Chavez.

Well, In Texas, if they were permitted to vote at all, it would only be as part of the local political machines, which were Democratic.  The only Hispanic to serve in the Texas state legislature in the 19th century was a Confederate veteran.  Until 1952, thanks to poll taxes and gerrymandering, the number of Hispanics in the Texas state leg were either 1 or 0.

At the beginning of 1952, there were 22 Hispanic state legislators, one in Texas, one in Colorado, one in Arizona and 19 in New Mexico.  The first Latino in California legislature wasn't until 1962.  So, really, until the 1960s, the only state Mexican Americans held any clout was New Mexico.

Why do you say that?  While I don't agree with the OP (Mexican Americans were not solidly Republican until Nixon, of course), I don't think they were necessarily reliably Democratic after the Civil War.  Traditionally Hispanic parts of New Mexico tended to vote Republican before the New Deal.

I believe Univision is directly responsible for the indoctrination of Hispanic voters. And I do not believe the increased numbers of the ones voting now are necessarily actual US citizens, because we have no proof of it-  they sued to stop voter ID.
