"Welcome back America with our 1974 Midterm Election night coverage. Right now we project that Jerry Brown, a Democrat and son of former California governor Pat Brown, has won the California gubernatorial election against Republican challenger Houston I. Flournoy. Jerry Brown will replace the current governor of California, Ronald Reagan."

Meanwhile, at Jerry Brown's campaign headquarters:

Intern: "Mr. Brown, you won the election!"

Jerry Brown: "That's nice I guess. I have bigger aspirations, but this is a good start."

Intern: "What are these bigger aspirations?"

Jerry Brown: "I want to become president!"

Fast Forward:

Everything happens like it did in real life. Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford in a close election, and  Brown wins reelection in 1978 and maintains relatively high approval ratings throughout his two terms as governor, but history took a different turn for the worse in 1980.

Bush won a majority of delegates, and chose Reagan to be the VP nominee.

August 10, 1980

Jerry Brown and Linda Ronstadt talk to each other privately in a hotel room in New York City the day before the DNC.

Linda Ronstadt: "Jerry, it looks like you lost the Democratic primary to Jimmy Carter."

Jerry Brown:"Don't worry, I'll still be the nominee."

Linda Ronstadt: "How?"

Jerry Brown: "Easy, we have to kill Jimmy Carter* before he accepts his nomination for President of the U.S. See look, if Jimmy Carter is the nominee, he won't win because of his low approval ratings, but if we do kill Carter, then the delegates would have to revote at the convention. The delegates most certainly won't vote for the other option, Lyndon LaRouche, so I will most likely win the nomination, and then win the general election in a landslide because of the voters who will vote for me out of sympathy for Carter. You know, the 'Carter would've wanted Brown to win, so I'll vote for him' type mentality."

August 11th, 1980

BREAKING NEWS: JIMMY CARTER WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS HOTEL ROOM ON THE MORNING OF THE DNC!

The news of Carter's death went around incredibly quickly. His death saddened the nation. Americans everywhere were mourning after Carter's death. The Democratic Party rescheduled the DNC, and a prayer service was held at the arena the DNC was supposed to take place in. Walter Mondale was sworn in as POTUS shortly after the prayer service. The reason behind Carter's death was unknown at the time, and an investigation took place.

August 19, 1980:
The DNC was rescheduled to this date. The delegates had to revote at the convention,and the two options were Jerry Brown and Lyndon LaRouche. The delegates voted for Brown by a large margin, and Brown chose Llyod Bentsen to be his VP.




"Delegates, I accept your nomination for President of the United States. Carter's death has saddened us all, but it's time to move on. Carter is up in heaven right now, and he'd love it if I won the presidency. Let's do this for Carter!"

The Campaign:

 Brown led in most of the polls during the election season, and most expected him to win by a very large margin. Reagan as the VP choice for the GOP ended up being a huge mistake. Brown successfully convinced the American people that Reagan was a dangerous extremist, and that he should never become VP because of this. A lot of independents and Republicans (who were originally going to vote for Bush) supported Brown out of sympathy for Carter. Bush was also a very boring and bland speaker, so that didn't help him at all. Brown won by a large margin. Many compared this election to 1964 (some similarities include the fact that many people supported Johnson/Brown because of the fact that Kennedy/Carter died, Johnson/Brown portrayed Goldwater/Reagan as danger extremists, and because Johnson/Brown both won by very large margins).
