Both Clinton and Obama were basically this, at least when they were first elected. The modern Democrats seem to gravitate to that style, maybe as compensation for the loss of the Kennedys.

But 2016 seems to have no such candidate in either Party. Which I prefer; I like eggheads for President, ala Stevenson/McCarthy/McGovern.

Is it possible to say that Johnson was the last Democratic president who was not "young, charismatic rock star"?

Because Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama looked like "young, charismatic rock star"

If Hillary Clinton doesn't run, don't be surprised to see Julian Castro, Cory Booker or Kirsten Gilibrand changing their plans. Republicans also have a few ambitious politicians Under 50.

You could have asked if the Democrats got the young charismatic rock star thing out of their system when the party nominated Kerry. Right now, the environment is perfect for Hillary. But in later elections it may be advantageous to be a 40-something Democrat in the right political office.

Jimmy Carter had minor charisma, but he was certainly not to the level of Kennedy, Clinton or Obama.
