ITT: Identifying someone as an HP for using their conscience instead of heeding the wishes of a corpse.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a while now.

While Schatz is probably a better senator than Hanabusa would be and as such Abercrombie's choice was substantially the correct one, respecting Inouye's wishes would not have created some sort of democratic deficit, and to be honest I really don't see how the sensibility that the deceased's instructions should when possible be obeyed in such situations in general creates one either. Inouye was the person actually elected to the term in question, and he left office because he went the way of all flesh, not because he was embroiled in scandal like John Ensign or preferred to spend his time running a previously semi-respectable think tank into the ground like Jim DeMint. It's scarcely beyond the pale to say that in that event Inouye should have been replaced by the person whom he thought most capable of continuing the work he wanted done in the seat to which, again, he had been the person most recently elected, until such a time as the voters of Hawaii could have made that determination for themselves. Granted, as Hawaiian law actually stands Abercrombie is the person with the power to decide that, and it would be absurd to claim that that creates a democratic deficit either considering that Abercrombie had won a statewide election just as recently as Inouye had, but this idea that people who think Inouye's wishes should have been taken more into account think that because they have some sort of problem with democracy has got to stop.

Don't really know enough about him. Lean FF for standing up to the Hawaiian political establishment, though.

FF. He gave Hawaii a living wage and LGBT equality while giving the nation an awesome Senator.
