Using the dictionary definition: "conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated"

Declared it an ideology since I couldn't think of another letter to use.

I'm generally incredibly iffy on this type of thing. My position generally lies at the point where the issue is contentious and the word is malicious. For example, I am incredibly opposed to words that could be seen as offensive toward gay people since that is an issue on which a lot of Americans are still extremely prejudiced. The same goes for the n-word. Apparently people in the south still use that regularly (per my southern-born friend). I will forcefully confront someone that uses that word.

I do believe that it is often taken too far, however. I do not believe, for example, that the words "black" and "white" are offensive in describing people's races. I don't get uncomfortable over racist jokes unless I believe that there is an underlying seriousness to them, even if it isn't flat out apparent, which I determine on a case-by-case basis and I could sometimes be wrong. I don't know, its just how I deal with it. I'm a confused soul on political correctness. Probably still considered a crazy liberal elitist by the conservatives and possibly looked down on by some of the liberals here for not taking the hard line.

How about you?

somehow it's not surprising that a forum of upper-middle-class white guys would hate political correctness. Roll Eyes

Causes problems insofar as it leads bedizened and cossetted people to complain endlessly and fruitlessly about it, which is the pits.

I think that that's actually very important. It lets me know whose opinions to discount immediately.

Yeah, the nice thing about political correctness is that you instantly know anyone who un-ironically complains about it is an obvious idiot.

A conduit for feigned outrage in every direction.

Still, it's generally better to avoid saying things that will be taken as outrageous, as the outrage will likely overshadow whatever point you were trying to make.

I understand why it exists, but it's usefulness is questionable in this day and age.

I'm shocked, shocked that a Republican would argue such a thing.

Somehow people have turned "politeness" and "basic human decency" and "not being a terrible asshole" into a negative and called it political correctness.

Basically, if you complain about political correctness, I'm going to assume you have terrible opinions that you're afraid to vocalize due to societal shunning, and the fact that you feel shame about your positions is a good thing because it shows how out of touch with modern society your terrible opinions are.

In the modern sense, its awful; in some historical senses (e.g. Anti-Communism during the 'Red Scare' for example) it was a good thing.

There's just a little bit of a difference between being polite and considerate and sensitive, and instituting speech codes and unbroachable topics and shaming anyone who transgresses.

There's just a little bit of a difference between being polite and considerate and sensitive, and instituting speech codes and unbroachable topics and shaming anyone who transgresses.

This. Obviously you should try to be polite and not intentionally step on people's toes or offend people just to make some stupid point, but there are actual lines where some people go to crazy town because of it.

For instance, I've liked a lot of content from the site Mark Reads. I've spent hours reading a lot of the reviews there, and it's been insightful and entertaining, and all that jazz. If you ever try entering the comment sections, though, be wary that he bans such things as "ableist language." Meaning that if you ever use words like "crazy" or "idiot" or "insane" or "lame" or "mad" and others like them, even in the most casual, innocent way (ex. "I saw this movie last night and it was crazy awesome!") you can be straight-up banned for it. The same principle goes for a lot of the other -isms. That's what people get upset about as being ridiculously over-sensitive and being language and thought policing control freaks.

I find people who complain about political correctness to be highly politically correct, only their idea of what is correct is different.

Basically this. Anyone remember how dazzleman would throw a fit about the term "Native American" for example?
