What would the map have looked like if the Democrats had not nominated Carter or another nominee with similar southern appeal? Here's my guess:

What if George Wallace had gotten the Democratic nomination in 1976?  He'd probably at least match Carter's performance in the South.

Gerald Ford/Robert Dole (R)  267 EV

At that time, the Democrats needed a "big state" strategy if they didn't put a Southerner on top of the ticket.
