If my plans for proposal go as planned, my parents will know and see her ring before her parents will.

From what I've gathered, the standard practice amongst almost everyone I know who's married is to ask, and then after they say yes let their parents be the first people to know they got engaged. I've never once heard of someone asking the other person's parents first. Also what if the woman asks?

Why buy the ring before getting permission, if you're going to do that?

Well by the time you do that it's usually kind of a formality and the answer is assumed to be yes. What I'm finding absurd here is the idea that you need "permission" from the parents of someone to be engaged to them and that anyone asks this in 2014. Why would an adult need permission from their parents to do ANYTHING for that matter? (Excluding of course the obvious exception of cases where want they wanted to do involved their parents' property.)

Allison should ask permission from Mama Bushie. These families are de facto matriarchies. Bushie has already acknowleged that Allison is "the boss." Why not align formalities with reality?

Let's just hope he brings his cattle/shekels with him. According to Old Testament Biblical teachings, Bushie doesn't have to ask for permission from the father unless he has already raped her, and he can never divorce her. New Testament doesn't specify at all. So in reality, "conservative Christian culture" is just "contrived Oklahoma patriarchy".

What will happen first? Allison gets pregnant or Bushie finds stable employment?

It will happen on the Fourth! Cheesy Did Bushie seek permission from any of his 3 previous fiancees' fathers?

I did (sorta).  Fiancee's 1 and 3 had no father, so I had to ask the mother.

Am I the only one who loves this?

This is Oklahoma, she doesn't want to be burnt at the stake.

That's also how it works in rural New England, which despite being one of the most secular parts of the country along with some roughly equivalent areas in the Northwest is still more traditionalist in its cultural assumptions than a lot of outsiders think.

Let's just hope he brings his cattle/shekels with him. Simple Truth-worthy.

If Papa Allison said no, would Bushie have to break up with her?

This question is a moot point.  He gave me his blessing.

How was the dinner? Where did you go? What did you eat? Have you told papa and mama Bushie the good news?

1. "Fabulous!"
2. Braum's
3. Cheeseburgers
4. Of course, I'd be surprised if he doesn't propose tonight

Did you guys discuss your employment issues? Are we getting a proposal on the 4th (or maybe even earlier)?

Just a side note: Without me and a few of the other Update regulars, Bushie and Allison would not be a couple right now.

Just thought that was worth noting.

Bushie without Update: In jail, unemployed, no fiancee.
Bushie with Update: Not in jail, sitting on a couple of hot leads, has a fiancee.

It's pretty simple.

If Eraserhead isn't invited to the wedding, at the very least, then it'll be a slap in the face and a total disgrace.

Oh!  How joyous would it be to have an Atlas party at the Bushie wedding!?

Yeah, that would be great! At the very least I'd finally get to try one of these Braum's cheeseburgers the characters on this show are always eating.
