I love having Pence as my governor, but I don't like putting him into a position to enact real social change.

He's got the economic stuff down though.

What's his gubernatorial record look like?
He's been stealing a lot of jobs from Illinois. I don't know about the hard numbers, but there's currently a very large professional district being built in the town next to me. Apparently quite a few companies are moving in there. Plus more around the state.

I actually don't dislike Mike Pence that much.

I don't see an opening for him he'd be a first term Gov against two termers like Walker, Jindal, Christie, Bush he'd have much less of a record to tout come 2016 than the others in the field. Also what sets him apart from Walker how would he be a stronger candidate?

He'd be a great VP choice, but I don't know about president. Too lackluster, the GOP seems to want a relatively well-spoken true believer type.

Paul/Pence would have my enthusiastic support, but I'd be fine with the reverse. Even though Pence maybe one of the most Presidential looking candidates, there's just something... missing.

Why he brings nothing to a GOP ticket. Not a women, not from a swing state, not a minority etc.

Yes! I knew that Pence would mull a run. Conservative fundraiser Richard Viguerie recently wants him as the nominee.
http://washingtonexaminer.com/top-conservative-2016-not-ted-cruzs-turn-favors-mike-pence-rand-paul-ticket/article/2546933

Let me say this now: If he's in the race, he may be the dark horse nominee. If he's the nominee, I wonder who would be his running mate. I would go with another Midwesterner or John Thune. Double down on the Midwest and don't overshadow Pence. Classic. Rob Portman would be a good VP for Pence too, but since Pence appeals to social conservatives, they may balk at that because Portman now supports same-sex marriage. Rand Paul would be good too as a VP.

I voted for Pence in the last couple of "who will win" threads here (I think I was the only one).  I have been saying for a while that the GOP race is wide open and ripe for additional entrants who can jump to the top tier (just like Perry did in 2011). Pence has all it takes to be in that top tier, not the least of which is the backing of the Koch brothers.

He'll do well in the primaries, but in a general election his support of a constitutional marriage amendment will hurt him.

What states do you think that he will end up carrying against Hillary Clinton?

Depends how he plays things off, and who he chooses as his VP.
Here is are a few very preliminary maps:
Close Race:

HRC 276EV
Pence 262EV

Ceiling:

Pence 297
HRC/Bullock 241EV

Floor:

HRC 347EV
Pence 191EV

I'm actually surprised he hasn't been mentioned more often, but I guess it's because he has to choose between running for president and running for re-election. He's well positioned to run in 2020 if the Dem wins, though.

I don't actually agree with him on anything, but a 54 year old mid-size state governor who spent over a decade in Congress (where he was the third-ranking Republican) is definitely someone worth watching.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune would be a good and the safest vice presidential running mate for Pence; he could help in Iowa and Wisconsin  but Thune may be too "establishment" for him.

But would he find Thune sufficiently soothing?  He is from the Midwest, after all.

I like Pence and think he would do rather well in the primaries and maybe even the general.  I agree with the dark-horse speculation.  I do hope he runs.

Haha. I don't know if he's soothing, but he's an experienced Midwesterner.

His narrow win for the Governor's race in Indiana suggests that he may not play well nationwide. I believe he also had a very conservative voting record while he was in the House.

Ah yes, after he finishes running Indiana into the ground, we can begin work on the nation as a whole.

Splendid!

Wouldn't a conservative voting record be of benefit in the primaries?  It may be of little benefit in the general, but the primaries are where the bases come out, are they not?

For Pence's ceiling he wins Nevada yet not New Hampshire, and for his floor, he still wins Arizona, Georgia and Missouri?

Pence would have to resign like Christie and Walker if he wants to be able to raise the $$$ from Wall St. Remember the strict campaign finance rules against Governors.

It's more problematic for Christie as Wall Street has more dealings with New Jersey.

Rick Perry was able to run and raise a decent amount of money as a sitting Governor, although he had the advantage of decades of familiarity with Texas fundraisers.

I don't see what Pence brings to the table that Walker doesn't.
Not a fan of Pence, but he did have a respectable stint in the Congress, so he brings a combination of legislative and executive experience, as well as a knowledge of Washington most Governors lack.
