Mostly because Iran and Iraq increased their execution rate.

Amnesty has no numbers on China, but estimates "a few thousands".

The US is the only country in the Americas to still carry out executions.

Belarus is the only country in Europe, but it did not have an execution in 2013.

When three Countries are responsinble for 80% of the world's recorded executions...that's pretty distubing.

Also I had no idea that Japan still had the death penalty...

Also, when one country is responsible for nearly all executions of the "developed world", that's pretty disturbing too.

Agreed.  Europe needs to bring back the death penalty. Tongue

Frequently, they're not murderers... often they're political dissidents.

Not in the US, they aren't.

There is a significant number of innocent people in US jails.

There is a significant number of innocent people in all jails, but being in jail isn't what this thread is about and I'm pretty sure you knew that.

Better get rid of jails then?

There is a qualitative difference between being incarcerated and being dead.

If someone is mistakely jailed, we can free him. If someone was mistakely executed, we can't revive him.

The US is the only country in the Americas to still carry out executions.

Sadly, futher executions are still quite possible in the Carribean, with Saint Kitts and Nevis hanging a man in 2008, and other countries of the region wowing to carry out death sentences.

IIRC, the third most recent state to carry out executions in the Americas was Cuba (2003?), preceded by Guatemala (2000).

Most of the people executed in the US deserve it so we shouldn't be lumped in with Iran and China.
