October 16, 1999: Texas Governor George W. Bush (R) was being introduced by Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry (R) during a town-hall meeting with enthusiastic supporters on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio.

Bush was speaking about his plan (such as education reform, limited government, etc.Wink for the American people (months after announcing his candidacy for the White House in the upcoming 2000 Presidential campaign), until all of a sudden, at least seven or ten shots were being fired: the first shot missed (sounded like a firecracker being fired in the crowd distracting security), the second shot hits Governor Bush in the neck and two more hit him fatally in the backside of his head, blowing half of it off.

The sniper then fires shots at U.S. Senator Phil Gramm (R-Texas) as well as Gen. Colin Powell, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both were injured. Then as the crowd starts screaming, the sniper continues to shoot again, at least five others have been also shot.

At 2:00 P.M. (CST) Brooke Army Medical Center: San Antonio, TX:  Karl Rove, Governor Bush's chief of staff, announced Governor Bush's death and wept openly as other staff members consoled him.

At 3:30 P.M., Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry was sworn into office as the 47th Governor of Texas by Chief Justice Tom Phillips of the Texas Supreme Court inside the Texas State Senate chamber and will be delivering remarks in a few hours.

4:00 P.M., Governor Perry delivering remarks inside the Texas State Capitol Rotunda.

Speaker Laney, Senate Pro Tem President Ellis, Governor Hobby, Governor Barnes, and also would like to recommend Governors Smith, Clements, Briscoe, White and Richards here with us today. Good evening my fellow Texans, our hearts are with the family of Governor George W. Bush and the entire Bush family on an unspeakable loss that all Texans and the entire nation is going through right now.

Let me be clear, we're going to find the culprit or culprits who committed this awful crime and the punishment will be death. Our justice system works and will effectively work to find whoever was involved in committing this horrific act of violence against our beloved governor.

His shadow will loom large over this granite building, for its shadow of a great man. He's an inspiring leader, a trusted friend, whose shoes will be extremely difficult to fill.
