I'll say FF overall, despite War on Drugs, big spending, and Iran-Contra.

HP, he was a senile old hack who was corrupt, intensified the drug war, and even had a racist side.

He also drifted the GOP majorly to the Right, *sigh* I wish Baker won in 1980.

Actually, it was Nixon who did that. Reagan just continued it.

It's basically a coin toss. Reagan did some pretty important things that helped the country, while at the same time screwing up in many other ways. Gun to my head: Reagan's an FF.

Nixon started the War on Drugs, man.

Anyway, FF.

Like I said in the Carter thread, people should vote more based on their presidencies. It's baffling that Jimmy Carter has a higher approval rating than Theodore Roosevelt and James Monroe for the only reasons being the racism of the latter two.

A good, effective President who did a lot to bring the country's confidence back after a disastrous decade.

Hardly one of the all-time greats, though. Just not significant enough.

This. I don't agree with him about everything; in particular his rhetoric on the state (although his views were probably more a product of the time when he was an active politician), but still, he did some good things with regards to the economy and in particular foreign policy. A balanced budget, something he admitted that he had totally failed upon, would have been nice, but, on the other hand, it was rather incompatible with his other objectives, so I can't fault him for that either.

FF

Brokered the deal with Saudi Arabia (along with HW) that brought down the USSR. Legitimized supply-side economic policy. Simplified the tax code. Beat down the cocaine cartels and the military despots in the Americas. Helped restore economic integrity in the US without abusing inflation. Immigration reform.

Unfortunately, he had a case of hypermorality which caused him to associate "wrong" with "evil". If he thought you were wrong, he was only interested breaking you. It was a valuable characteristic for foreign policy, but it wasn't terribly useful for domestic affairs.

On balance, he was a patriot, and we were lucky to have him.

He was opposed to Martin Luther King Day, blocked a bill that would sanction Apartheid-South Africa, and the "Young Buck" thing.

The King Family also opposed it. And by racism I mean in a purely American definition. Reagan didn't hate blacks, even though blacks hated him.

He literally made a speech about states rights next to the site where civil rights activists were murdered in the 1960s. He was a racist piece of sh[ink]s and his policies were as well.

The only things that I can think that were pretty great and that were made by him were reappointing Paul Volker as FED Chairman and helping to speed up an end to the Cold War.

You give many of the first 18 presidents HP status because they owned slaves, but judge Reagan based on his actual presidency. Something's wrong.
