It is November 2nd, 1948. You don't know what the future will bring--no hindsight. All you know is the candidate's positions and actions up to and including November 1948.

The candidates are:

President Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States, who took the mantle of the Presidency upon the death of the beloved Franklin Roosevelt in April 1945 and led the nation through it's victory in World War II and begun the Cold War in earnest not long after.

Thomas Dewey, the young Governor of New York and former District Attorney, known for his fierce pursuit of Mafia figures in Mafia, and for being a fierce opponent of President Roosevelt in the election of 1944. Dewey is thought of as being a moderate, middle of the road Republican.

Strom Thurmond, Governor of South Carolina, of the States' Rights Party. Thurmond, formerly a Democrat, walked out of the party after Truman attempted to have civil rights be part of the DNC's platform at the Convention. Thurmond and his party strongly support the continuance of segregation and Jim Crow laws, and hope to force the election into the House of Representatives, at which point they will force concessions on the matter of civil rights from whoever wins the election.

With hindsight, Dewey, but seeing as I live in Florida, I'd probably support Thurmond or Truman at the time.

Why are people voting for Thurmond?

Well he's the closest of the three to a modern Republican, so it's not surprising.

Or Henry Wallace, depending upon my mood and whether or not the 1948 version of me has wised up to the fact that the USSR is not the socialist paradise the left has been led to believe

Dewey enthusiastically.

And where's Henry Wallace?  After all, he would surely win an Atlas vote.

No he wouldn't. This forum is full of liberals, not socialists or communists (the latter being Wallace's base in 1948).

Oh, really?  Tell that to the people who express support for Eugene Debs, Emma Goldman, and Bernie Sanders, among others.  Not to mention that you consider yourself a socialist.

I support Debs and Sanders, but I don't identify as a socialist.

Also, the True Leftists for Hillary crowd would like to talk.
