Inspired by today's edition of the student newspaper, which had this on the opinion page:

Who else thought of the Rolling Stones after seeing the title?

I have the lady of the lake's arm coming out of the water holding excalibur on my upper right arm.

Similar to this pick just no mountain backgrounds.

Seeing as how my likely line of work is going to be as a union organizer, I really don't foresee that happening.

encircled by a lotus flower, or by an oak wreath clutched by a mean-looking eagle?

None, I would never do that to my body. It's gross, it would hurt, it's permanent, and a lot of college guys my age who decide to get them usually regret getting them when they're older. That or their family highly disapproves of it. The stick-on kind of tattoos that wash off easily are perfectly okay though! I just don't find the real tattoos attractive or necessary in any way except to be with the "cool crowd" as it also applies to things like alcohol, smokes, piercings, etc.

That's quite an ignorant opinion, to say the least.

Then why would you use what looks so similar to one of Corporate America's most iconic logos?

As for me, no tattoos. I fail to see the rationale or the appeal behind them. I realize for certain South Pacific indigenous groups, it is a tradition. But for anyone else, it seems like more of a juvenile affectation that one will come to regret when older.

It isn't an MSNBC "position" as you thought in the chat, but that's just what I think. Simply put, people should have respect for their bodies and like their appearance how they are without piercing your tongue or ears or putting a tattoo of something on your back to make themselves feel better.

Not something I'd likely ever do, but I don't mind other people getting tattoos (normal). If they get a really awful one or one that looks terrible as they age that's their own problem.

What effect does this have on you? Literally none at all. You just want to carry this elitist attitude that people do things these things they enjoy to "be cool" or whatever. Have you ever considered that tattoos or piercings or whatever are actually human expressions that mean something to the person who has them? And the opinion of that you shouldn't have to "change your body" is so asinine and naive that I don't even know where to start with that.

And obviously my MSNBC comment was tongue-in-cheek but of course you wouldn't understand that.

I knew a guy with a W tattooed on both cheeks, so that when he bent over, it said "wow."

If he hung upside down, it said "mom."

okay, that was trolling.  I don't really know anyone who put a W on either cheek, but it seemed like an entertaining idea at the time.

What really inspired the poll was that I was surprised at how low the percentage was.  33% had ink.  I'd have figured it was higher.  No doubt it was not a scientific poll, and they didn't give the number of respondents anyway, but I thought it would be interesting to compare to this community.  Seems like roughly the same fraction (~2/3 of self-reporters) have no ink.

I do know a well-respected physicist who has been with the US Department of Energy for many years who has a Feynman diagram of an electron-positron annihilation on his right arm.  How cool is that?

None. Not really my thing. I don't see anything wrong with a well-placed, classy tattoo, though. I do wonder about some of these guys, though, like athletes who are all tattooed top to bottom. That's rather bizarre to me.
