Generally awful, though a breath of fresh air in an odd way: It's one of the only 90s style sitcoms still on the air. Refreshing to see such a show be one of the top watched on TV instead of all the reality TV garbage we have today, even if the show itself is crap.

It's actually really amusing (1st option), what I have seen of it anyway, and the jokes are common knowledge enough that I usually get them. Granted, I haven't watched it that much, but I've certainly seen it. I know a few folks who would probably be from that milieu (Star Wars nerd or maybe just really geeky, IDK) who dislike the show for various reasons, "not realistic," lol, being one of the main ones that I hear.

Great show, has NO LAUGH TRACK (filmed in front of a live studio audience). Glad it will make it to 10 seasons.

Big Bang Theory is basically like a middle school bully's caricature of people who find science/math interesting.  I imagine it also appeals somewhat to the deep resentment of academia and intellectualism in certain conservative circles (several studies have shown self-described conservatives are significantly more likely to be fans of the show than self-described liberals).  I'd suspect it lets them feel superior in much the way I've seen some liberals regularly watch Fox News and smugly congratulate themselves for seeing through such obvious propaganda before flipping back to MSNBC.  The show is basically nerdface, completely relies on a de facto laugh track (like pretty much all of Chuck Lorre's shows), and the characters are pretty awful.  The Indian and the Jewish guy are one-note sexist losers who have literally no arc beyond "one/both says something objectifying women, tries to hump anything in sight, fails in a manner that emphasizes how pathetic he/they are."  Penny is a rather shallow and the writing for her character is too inconsistent for her to have much of an arc.  I'll admit Leonard didn't seem as horrible as the others in the episodes I've seen, but he's still pretty much "insert generic sitcom straight-man here."  Sheldon's character is something of a one-trick pony and from what people I know who still watch the show have said, it sounds like he becomes a worse and worse human being as the show progresses.  Granted, in the first season he was already pretty much a caricature who seemed like something you'd find in a post-college version of Dexter's Lab.  So yeah, horrible show.

Funny thing is this whole post is pretty much exactly the opposite to how most geeks/nerds actually see the show. Plus it shows you only watched like an episode to see the character development in all the characters and how they are all growing form each other.

It's worth pointing out that nerd culture is different from academic or intellectual culture. There really are plenty of intellectuals and certainly plenty of academics who are not nerds.

Nerds tend to have an obsessive, very specific and often studious fixation on something that's usually imaginative or directed at a very specific type of interest (mythology, sci-fi, etc.), and it is humorous.

But you know, I'm not easily offended. You know the characters that Chevy Chase usually plays? Very middle class white guy, clumsy, absent-minded, suburban? Doesn't bother me. I think it's funny. Like, "Oh yeah, that would happen to me!" You know? Maybe we should just lighten up a bit with regard to this kind of stuff.

So you mean it's funny? And that it doesn't actually have a laugh track? It's not a bad show like Community is.

It's the show people watch to try and be "cool" or not fit in with the "mainstream idiots who watch the not funny BBT". So bascially a crappy, not funny hipster show.

Wouldn't it be better for us all if you go down to Venezuela and support your socialist workers in their glorious class revolution and help the facists keep power???

It's not as bad as Portlandia. But that's basically the low limit of modern comedy.

You seem pretty defensive about this Tongue  Not liking the show isn't a personal attack on you, life's too short to get bent out of shape over stuff like opinions of a sitcom.

It's not the worst show on TV or anything, but it's pretty bad.  It would help if all 4 characters didn't have every single nerd stereotype (seriously, there's a lot of diversity among nerd interests), and Sheldon is far too much of an asshole to enjoy the show.

Eh, I watch it sometimes. I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other about it.
