Which president was the most informal? By which I mean let's say appeared out of a suit as much as possible, dressed like a regular guy and generally didn't go with the formality and pomp and circumstance of the office?

Dubya has to be high up there.  With all of his time excercising, being on the ranch and at Camp David and other opportunities that cropped up, he ditched the suit often, just not in the Oval Office.

Carter tried very hard to act informally, but wasn't very natural at this.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Jefferson so far. He didn't act like a "regular guy" as understand the term now, but he shunned etiquette significantly.

He certainly was one of our more informal ex-Presidents.

It doesn't compare to this:

Edit: And this is pretty tame compared to some of the other things he did.

Jimmy Carter enjoyed making public appearances in sweaters and khakis rather than suits.

Jimmy Carter. He kind of said he would be informal, cut back on the pageantry and pomp and circumstance to an extent, and wanted to be known as "Jimmy." Should have gone all the way and asked me to known as "Jimbo." Wink

Maybe Kennedy or Clinton, or possibly Carter.

However, Obama has to take the cake for using the phrase "fired up and ready to go" repeatedly in his speeches.
