My views are moderately centre left.

A more equitable distribution of wealth is something I believe in. The gap between rich and poor is fairly narrow in Scandinavian countries and Germany and UK should aim for a similar outcome.

The NHS and welfare state are good things although the present coalition government is attempting to make work pay so people are encouraged to come off benefits and I agree with that.

Social mobility has stalled in the UK and I have a suspicion the abolition of most of the grammar schools in the 60's and 70's has something to do with it so I would support policies which brought them back so long as funding for the current comprehensives are kept in line with them.

I'm in favour of state funding for political parties as the current system tends to encourage corruption. What each party spends at general elections should be dependent on the average level of support they obtained in the previous three general elections.

The energy companies should either be regulated far more rigorously or brought back into public ownership as privatisation clearly hasn't worked as it should have.

New laws should be introduced so that if there is another banking crisis the bank bosses can be prosecuted and if found guilty of serious illegality then thrown in jail.

On social issues I'm against the death penalty and legalising drugs and in favour of allowing abortion (although I'd like the amount of time a woman can carry a baby before it is aborted reduced).

I would say that I am strongly to the right.

On economic issues, I feel that efforts to 'manage' the economy are in most cases deluded, and the best that can be hoped for is amelioration of the harshness of the free market through regulations and restrictions. So, whilst this mixes in with moral matters a little, I am in favour of banning prostitution, shop bought pornography and drugs, as I feel that these really serve no good or necessary purpose, and are in the vast majority of cases harmful to those who get involved with them.

Also, in terms of regulations, I am in favour of restricting shopping on Sunday's, as it is a day of rest for Christians like myself (and to give everyone else a break from it). I also support robust regulation of financial instiutions and trade unions.

When it comes to government spending and taxation, I feel that it is the duty of the government to maintain large, efficient and well trained military and police forces. As well, I feel that there should be a government run health insurance scheme for the poorest member's of society, although I do feel that a larger role in the provision of health and welfare needs to be delegated to the church, charities and community groups. This is especially true in the case of welfare, as - am generally opposed to the existance of state pensions, as well as to most welfare payments (I would retaina very modest dole, subject to extensive means testing). I would also abolish payments such as child benefit and educational maintenance allowance.

I am also opposed to the use of short term keynesian spending, as this is both irresponsible and unriable. I feel that the government should not set itself objectives, such as creating equality or growth, with regards to the broader economy, since these will almost always end in failure, and will result in more attention being paid to one section of policy than others. I would argue that the governemnt should restrict itself to more tangible goals, such as balancing budgets and reducing the level of government debt, as well as providing a stable of efficient, well run services.

On tax, I feel that a flat tax of between 15 and 25 percent is most agreeable, though of course this would be subject to change. I am also in favour of eliminating VAT altogether, or at least reducing it to a much lower level, such as 5 percent. This would not hold for all goods, as cigarettes and alcohol would probably see much heftier levels of tax levied upon them. I also think that inheritance tax should be eliminated, and I am opposed to all kinds of wealth and property taxes. It should also be possible to donate a small percentage of your income tax directly to the Church.

On moral matters, I am opposed to same-sex marriage and adoption. The abortion issue is a trickier one one, as I am accepting of abortions if the health and life of the mother is threatened by the birth of the infant. I am also unsure as to the merits of aborting very severely disabled babies (those who would not survive long outside the womb for instance). However, I feel that in most cases, even that of rape, that the potential life of the baby is important. I am also in favour of legalising euthanasia for the extremely terminally ill, provided that it has the consent of the family. When it comes to teenage and single mothers who cannot support their child, I am in favour of the government taking the baby and putting it up for adoption.

I am a monarchist, and do believe that the monarch has a right to criticise and if necessary, block the actions of an elected government, althoguh I believe the latter should be discouraged. I am also in favour on an unelected House of Lords, comprised of hereditary, life and spiritual peers. I would see the commons elected by fptp. I am also in favour of disestablishing the Church of England.

I am a democratic socialist who believes in a positivist conception of freedom/liberty, using governmental organs to level the very topographic playing field established by centuries of institutional oppression, maximizing the material prosperity of all while respecting the environment. I am an avid proponent of multiculturalism, globalization and large-scale immigration. I manage to be culturally "liberal" or "crunchy" while lacking a single iota of libertarian sentiments and affirming the existence of God.

I am weird. I feel like my forum character is actually interesting now that I've shed many of my contrived, generic characteristics. I'm real af rn. I only post here to see what particular posters (Al, Gully Foyle, The Head Beagle, Lief, Torie, oakvale, and Nathan) have to say about current events. You guys consistently amuse me or compel me to rethink my opinions.

edit: quick shoutout to Hashemite for his election blog, which is gold.

I consider myself a democratic socialist who both hates and agrees with everyone to one extent or another, pretty much.

I think I'll finally to a comprehensive post on this. It might take me a few days, but tonight I'll start with Social Issues. Nothing more than my basic beliefs and my own platform, nothing too into detail. I'll try to cover as most issues as I can.

Social Issues:

Gay marriage (Far left)Sad

 - Legalize nationally (civil rights issue). I would even go as far as to say people should marry multiple people if they want to.
 - Get the government out of marriage, the definition should be very broad, a bond between people.

Abortion (Mostly Left)Sad

 - Basically, I think women should always have the option of abortion and that option should always be available.
 - BUT, I do think there should be a requirement or a definite reason for that abortion.
 - I don't support abortion on demand, and I don't think being lazy or not knowing how to take care of a child cuts the deal.
 - I formerly supported second trimester bans or such. Now, I don't support any bans on abortion whatsoever.

Death Penalty (Left)Sad

 - Don't support under any circumstances. The state does not have the right to kill their own people.
 - Punishment and rehabilitation are needed, but killing someone for their crime is stooping down to the levels of that criminal themselves.

Prostitution (Left)Sad

 - Legalize. Again, like gay marriage, people should be able to do the things they want to do. That's pretty much all I have to say.

Death via Injection (Left)Sad

 - Allow. People should make their own decisions for themselves.
 - However, I think a person must qualify to a certain illness.

Religion (Center-left)Sad

 - I support the right to express religion or almost all circumstances.
 - I don't think religion should be removed from institutions because they are "offensive" to particular peoples.
 - Education should have nothing to do with religion however, as this has a major affect on the education itself. This is one of the only cases where religious opinions should be kept out of society.
 - Personally, I'm secular and non-religious. Not an atheist though, I'm just neutral. Believe in evolution.

Drugs (Far-left)Sad

 - Legalize all drugs. The government shouldn't regulate what you put in your body, and you should make those decisions for yourself.
 - This position goes for all food or drink contents of any kind.

Immigration (Center-left)Sad

 - Immigration process should be simpler and quicker. People shouldn't have to struggle to earn citizenship.
 - To those here illegally, they must go through the process of naturalization just like the legal immigrants did. Oppose immediate amnesty.
 - We should have basic border security, immigrants should have to follow the laws just like we do.
 - Oppose mass deportations and very rough treatment for illegals. They should have some form of punishment for breaking the laws though.

Stem-cell Research (Left)Sad

 - Completely approve. However its not like we should dramatically increase the funding. Keep it going obviously, but its not the most important thing focus on right now.

Space Exploration (Left)Sad

 - Exactly the same as my position on stem-cell research.

Overall:

I favor a hands off approach to every day life and social issues. My attitudes are different from the left in that we do not need to correct society, but leave society alone. I favor maximum amount of freedom to social practices and allow people to control their lives the way they would like to.

Economic Issues:

Minimum Wage (Right)Sad

 - I'm not for abolishing it, as that could lead to businesses treating people unfairly.
 - Don't raise it, but adjust to inflation every year.

Welfare (Right)Sad

 - In order to obtain government welfare, people must be in job training programs looking for work.
 - Cut the unnecessary welfare programs we don't need and only have a few programs. Simplify government welfare.
 - Encourage people to work and have programs teach people how to work.

Taxes (Far Right)Sad

 - Abolish IRS, implement a fair tax or a flat tax.
 - Cut taxes along with government spending.
 - Simplify the tax code and abolish a few ridiculous taxes.

Social Security (Far Right)Sad

 - Privatize social security so people can control their retirement.
 - Reform it in a way so were not spending the massive amounts of money on it we are now.

Government Subsidies (Far Right)Sad

 - Oppose, of any kind. Government should stay out of the free market in general.

Government and Business (Right)Sad

 - Oppose any government regulation of business.
 - Only the most corrupt big businesses should be dealt with by a little bit of government, and even then, it should be local government.

Federal Stimulus (Far Right)Sad

 - Oppose, the government doesn't fix the economy, the market and people do.

The Federal Reserve (Right)Sad

 - Perhaps the worst thing that's ever been created in US history, abolish it.
 - The cause of all our depressions and the reason we've racked up so much debt.
 - Diminished buying power of the dollar, go back to the gold standard.

Health Care (Right)Sad

 - Privatize healthcare, let people choose the healthcare they want.
 - Oppose "ObamaCare" or any type of national socialized healthcare system.

Education (Right)Sad

 - Support Voucher system for people to choose their sons/daughters schools.
 - Disconnect education from the federal level, make it a local issue.

Energy:

 - Privatize the energy sector, and become energy independent.
 - Support the Pipeline, use whatever effective forms of energy we have.
 - We can use green energy, but we shouldn't replace natural gas, coal, etc.

Overall:

I'm in favor of a smaller government, less regulations, lowering and simplifying taxes, and privatizing our current nationalized healthcare and social security. I'm very pro-capitalist, support people determining their economic future by merit, and support a hands off approach when it comes to the economy and the free market.

Domestic Policy:

Individual/Constitutional Rights (Far Left)Sad

 - Oppose Patriot Act, strongly. Freedom > Security/Safety always. And with that I oppose any kind of government violations of civil liberties.
 - Oppose government regulation of media, television, internet, video games, etc. for any reason. Government only invades on privacy and disrupts free entertainment when it does this.

Gun Control (Right)Sad

 - The right to own a gun is constitutionally protected, no exceptions.
 - However we should educate people about gun safety, have background checks, and require basic permits and licenses to own guns.
 - I don't support any kind of restrictions or bans on guns.

Stop and Frisk (Left)Sad

 - Oppose in all instances. Everybody is treated with due process.
 - You are innocent until proven guility, not the other way around.

Political Campaign Spending (Right/Left?)Sad

 - Oppose restrictions. Money is an expression and that expression shouldn't be limited
 - PACs and individuals should be able to spend how they want when they want.

Drawing the Lines (Left)Sad

 - An independent group should draw the lines for CD's and state legislative districts, and they should make sure they are fair to both sides.

Overall:

I support all individual rights and don't accept when those rights get infringed. I'm for less government regulation and intervention into our privacy and our daily activities.

Foreign Policy:

Military Spending (Left)Sad

 - Cut Military spending.
 - It will decrease our deficit, balance our budget faster, and remove unnecessary troops from unnecessary places.
 - I think we should remain a world superpower (economically) and have a powerful military, but we shouldn't be intervening in the world.

The Bush Wars (Left)Sad

 - Withdraw all troops, we wasted time and money with these wars.

United Nations (Left?)Sad

 - Scale back our current involvement.
 - Only use it in really bad situations.

Allies and Enemies (Left)Sad

 - In an ideal society, we shouldn't have allies or enemies, but since we don't live in a perfect world, we do have allies and enemies.
 - We shouldn't treat countries any differently based on whether they like us or not. This is also why I'm against humanitarian aid.
 - Example: we should not support one side of a war, as that will signal to the unlikeable country that we don't like them, which makes our reputation worse.

Trade (Right)Sad

 - Free trade with all countries to get the resources we need. Maintain good diplomacy as explained above so we're not pissing off other countries.
 - I support free trade with minimal protectionism.

Aid (Left?)Sad

 - As explained above in "allies and enemies".

Drones and Surveillance (Left)Sad

 - Only support drones to gather information, not to spy or kill any suspected terrorists.
 - Scale back massively our drone program and our current surveillance.

Overall:

I support a non-interventionist role in foreign policy. We should respect other nations independence as others respect our independence. We should cut our spending, but remain powerful in the world. We only use war as a solution when we are directly attacked.

Electoral Issues:

Statehood:

 - Let Puerto Rico, DC, or any other territory that want to become states become states.

Presidential Elections:

 - Abolish the electoral college, implement pure popular vote just like all other elections.
 - Electoral College makes presidential elections fun, but makes it more complex and unfair. It doesn't represent the actual votes.
 - We can still look at the election by county and state, but ultimately an election shouldn't be decided by a few swing states, they should be decided by pure votes and the people.

Congressional Term Limits:

 - I support term limits to limit the corruption of politicians.
 - Just like a president, there should be a time where they've served the people and their time is up.
 - Being a politician shouldn't be a lifetime career. It should be an opportunity.

Drawing the Lines:

 - Let and independent, non-partisan group draw the lines, and they should also make sure they're fair to both sides.
 - They way we do it now with the party that happens to be in power (in X state) before redistricting controlling the drawing of the lines is awful and unfair.

Overall:

Pretty libertarian, but I got some weird beliefs as well that don't fit the platform.

So, ElectionsGuy, since you oppose affirmative action on the basis of race or sex or whatever, do you also oppose legacy preferences at universities? Or are you fine and dandy with colleges and universities giving preferential treatment to the children of alumni?

Well can't answer for him, but my position is that any university under public control or receives any sort of public funding should not have either affirmative action (except perhaps income-based AA) or legacy preferences.

Yes, all people should be treated equally.

Good point, there probably shouldn't be any official definition. But if there had to be one, it would be what I said.

Why are you all questioning me anyway? This is a thread to write down beliefs, not debate them.

Participatory Democracy. In general, democracy is a great thing and should be expanded, but in a way that empowers the working class rather than the owner class. To that end, I support expanding elements of direct democracy where they already exist (participatory budgeting, for example) and establishing them where they do not. This country would be a lot better off were it run by people without shiny degrees from Ivy League schools.

Democratic Socialism. The economy should be democratically planned and managed for the benefit of the nation. I support the unionization of everything, high minimum wages, a crash reindustrialization program, reduction in working hours, and nationalization of most large-scale industry. Make the essentials of life free of charge and challenge market logic at every turn.

Progressive Nationalism. I'll just quote the Young Democratic Socialists of America on this one:

Quote from: Restricted
You must be logged in to read this quote.

Anti-Elitism. I don't know how much of an explanation this one needs, but I am equally opposed to the elitism of Country Club Conservatives and the Arugula-eating, gun-hating, upper middle class liberal moralists of the coasts.

International Solidarity. Support the Palestinians in their struggle for nationhood, end the global US military and financial empire, and stay the hell out of the internal affairs of other nations. War is a racket and should be avoided; the only instances in which war is permissible is in self defense and if approved by the United Nations Security Council. "Humanitarian intervention" is often a code word for capitalist imperialism, and has been since the 19th Century.

I guess that's that.

Social Policy
Abortion: Oppose abortion in most instances. Only allow it in case of rape, incest, or health of the mother. Implement a program that assists young mothers who can afford to raise their child in order to prevent a potential abortion. I’d imagine this would consist of subsidies similar to any other welfare program.
Drugs: Federally decriminalize marijuana and cocaine. Leave enforcement to the states.
Censorship: The Federal government should not censor television or radio, but I would hope the broadcasting companies draw a line at some point.
Gay marriage: Abolish marriage licenses, and implement civil unions. Churches have the right to marry whoever they want.
Death penalty: A states right.
Prostitution: States can legalize it if they so choose.
Church & State: I think they should be kept separate. Churches should be tax exempt.
Affirmative action: Oppose.
Hate crime laws: A “hate crime” is still a crime. If I kill a person in cold blood, it is an act of hate, no matter what their race/gender/sexual orientation is. No additional penalties/distinction should be made.
Immigration: Secure the border first and foremost. Allow all illegal aliens who have lived here for twenty years, have no criminal record, and speak passable English the status of “permanent resident.” Deport all illegal immigrants who are arrested and convicted of a crime.
Stem cell research: I think private research can solve this. I support stem cell research, and think it should be pursued.
PATRIOT Act: Repeal it!
Gun Control: Oppose almost all forms of gun control.
Assisted suicide: States have a right to legalize it. I support its legalization.
Gambling: Again, a state’s decision.

Electoral Reform:
Term limits: No term limits for Congress or judges. The President should be limited to two terns.
Statehood: Oppose Puerto Rican and DC statehood. Allow DC representation in Congress.
Voting age: Keep it at 18.
Campaign Finance Reform: Require complete transparency, but allow unlimited donations from individuals.
Voting system: Status quo.
Gerrymandering: A non partisan commission should draw districts, but I don’t care enough to push it.
Voter ID: You need some form of ID to get alcohol, cigarettes, to board a plane, and so on. Why shouldn’t it be required when you vote?

Economic Issues:
Welfare: Support Medicare, Medicaid, as well as subsidies for single mothers, and other disadvantaged people. Education/vocational training should be required for unemployment checks, however. I also think welfare should be run by the states.
Unions:  I support right to work legislation,
Privatization: Minor reforms to Social Security, but no privatizations of major welfare programs. Privatize certain departments of the federal government.
Environment: Basic regulations, but I’m not overly concerned, outside of the coal slurries.
Minimum wage: Keep minimum wage as it is.
Taxation: Implement a consumption tax.
Healthcare: Repeal Obamacare, and implement single payer healthcare funded by a national sales tax. Public healthcare will not be made available to illegal immigrants.
Trade: Repeal NAFTA, implement tariffs. Encourage reindustrialization.
Embargo: End the embargo on Cuba.
Pork: Oppose. It’s not healthy for our nation, and the money could be better spent.
Subsidies: End farm subsidies for agro corporations.
Military: Massive cuts, withdraw armed forces back to our hemisphere. Reduce spending by 40%.

Foreign Policy
War: Only by a Congressional declaration. Oppose almost all foreign interventions.
Israel-Palestine: Neutral, but push for a two state solution. End US military and economic aid to Israel.
Draft: Absolutely oppose.
UN: Remain in the UN, but I would prefer to see the UN gutted and reformed so it is more of a yearly diplomatic gathering and less of an influence on international affairs. The annoying third way, teary eyed internationalists who comprise most of the UN leadership want our nation to police the world.
Nukes: Maintain and occasionally upgrade the American nuclear arsenal, but do not expand it.
Foreign Aid:  Oppose all military aid. I support disaster relief, such as supporting Haiti, however,
Overall: Odd fusion of Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul. I support an ideally private healthcare system, but we are too far gone with Obamacare, so the only other option is full blown single payer. Otherwise I’m your standard Paleoconservative.

Social Policy
Abortion: Completely legal until the end of 2nd trimester, illegal unless the life of the mother depends on it.
Drugs: Federally decriminalize marijuana. Leave enforcement to the states.
Censorship: The Federal government should not censor communications
Gay marriage: Let two consenting adults wed if they choose so.
Death penalty: Let states decide on the issue.
Prostitution: States can legalize it if they so choose.
Church & State: Completely seperated. Churches should be tax exempt.
Affirmative action: Support
Hate crime laws: A “hate crime” is still a crime. If I kill a person in cold blood, it is an act of hate, no matter what their race/gender/sexual orientation is. No additional penalties/distinction should be made.
Immigration: Open the border, make immigration easier for people coming into the United States from other countries.
Stem cell research: I think private research and public research can solve it and work together to advance the effects of it.
PATRIOT Act: Repeal it.
Gun Control: Require mandatory tests to make sure people are able to use a gun safely, background checks required for all people purchasing guns offline and online, ban plastic guns, and ban automatic weapons.
Assisted suicide: Oppose.
Gambling: States decision.

Electoral Reform:
Term limits: No term limits for Congress or judges. The President should be limited to two terms.
Statehood: Support Puerto Rican, DC, and Guam statehood.
Voting age: Keep at 18.
Campaign Finance Reform: Require complete transparency, limit contributions to $9,000
Voting system: Ranked choice voting for up to four candidates.
Gerrymandering: A non partisan commission should draw districts.
Voter ID: No voter ID required because it is a virtually non existent problem that just causes complications at the voting booth for many people.

Economic Issues:
Welfare: Support Medicare, Medicaid, as well as subsidies for single mothers, and other disadvantaged people. Programs run nationally.
Unions: Oppose right to work legislation.
Privatization: Minor reforms to Social Security, but no privatizations of welfare programs.
Environment: Status quo and ban fracking.
Minimum wage: Raise minimum wage to $12.
Taxation: Status quo, but end subsidies to large oil companies, large banks, etc.
Healthcare: Keep the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Trade: Status quo.
Embargo: End the embargo on Cuba.
Pork: This shouldn't really be an issue?
Subsidies: Extend farm subsidies to all farms with the exception of the top 10% of earning farms.
Military: Massive cuts, withdraw armed forces back to our hemisphere. Reduce spending by 30%.

Foreign Policy
War: Only by a Congressional declaration. Oppose almost all foreign interventions.
Israel-Palestine: Neutral, but push for a two state solution. End US military and economic aid to Israel.
Draft: Absolutely oppose.
UN: Remain in the UN.
Nukes: Maintain and occasionally upgrade the American nuclear arsenal, but do not expand it.
Foreign Aid:  Oppose all military aid. Support disaster relief.
Overall: I support a national healthcare system, but I am more in favor of the current law in place where health insurance companies don't screw you over and so the private sector can handle this.

(Thanks Sanchez)

Death penalty: strongly oppose
Prostitution: 100% legal
Church & State: separate

Stem cell research: 100% support
PATRIOT Act: repeal that garbage
Gun Control: support assault weapon bans and some restrictions on magazine bans as well as background checks, but that's about it.
Assisted suicide: if the patient wants it, let them have it.

Voting age: 18.
Campaign Finance Reform: ban pacs and implement an individual donation cap

Economic Issues:
Welfare: keep it in the hands of the government, and have it be available on demand for those who need it.
Unions: approve

Social Policy
Abortion: Allow on demand at any stage of pregnancy, with no questions asked, no frivolous restrictions placed upon it by state legislatures and completely free of charge.
Drugs: Legalize 'em.
Censorship: No thank you.
Gay Marriage: End marriage as a civil institution.
Death penalty: No thank you.
Prostitution: Legalize it.
Church and State: Ban religious schools, restrict religion in the public sphere, and tax churches very heavily.
Stem cell research: Support (not living in 2003)
PATRIOT Act: Repeal it.
Gun control: Completely opposed, legalize all guns and require gun training courses in schools. Ideally replace the standing army with citizens' militia, same goes for the police force (assuming we're also abolishing most of the criminal code in favor of a more restitution-oriented kind of criminal code, of course) and nationalize the gun industry. Very strongly supportive of "gun culture" and individual self defense.
Assisted suicide: Legalize it.
Gambling: Nationalize the gambling industry and make it a socially productive activity.

Electoral Reform
Term Limits: Dumb, repeal all that exist.
Statehood: For whom? Let the territories decide their own fate, err on the side of independence. Ideally redraw all state boundaries along cultural/geographic/economic lines.
Voting Age: 16, would like to introduce more participatory forms of governance, like mint mentioned above (demarchy is a sweet idea)
Campaign Finance Reform: Ban all corporate donations, end corporate personhood, limit campaigning to two weeks only, completely cover all campaign expenses out of the public treasury so as not to have so many corrupt douchebags in office
Gerrymandering: Adopt proportional representation
Voter ID: End voter registration, let anyone who can make it to the polls vote

Economic Issues
Welfare: Universal basic income + National Healthcare + Universal housing program + Universal Food Stamps + $21 an hour minimum wage + Right to a Job + National Education
Unions: Should essentially run the economy, very very very supportive, abolish all restrictions on them (Taft-Hartley, Landrum-Griffin, Hatch Act, ect), encourage their growth, ban scabs, require union shops and hiring halls, etc
Privatization: Make a U-Turn and start nationalizing large industries
Environment: something something free mass transit something something universal auto insurance something something national parks
Minimum Wage: $21/hour
Taxation: Confiscatory rates on the 1%
Healthcare: NHS style, with the state owning the hospitals; the state should also own all drug companies and produce useful drugs for public consumption
Trade: End "free trade," in favor of an industrial policy focused on employing Americans and creating products that are long lasting and cheap
Embargo: End it
Pork: Ban
Subsidies: Nationalize any institution receiving federal dollars
Military: End standing army in favor of citizen militias, end all overseas activity, bring troops home etc

Foreign Policy
War: Only if the US is attacked/UN Security Council approves it
Israel-Palestine: Recognize Palestine, ignore Israel
Draft: No, but favorable to the idea of universal national service in non-military settings, provided said service pays union wages to those employed by it (and because that's not likely, the answer is emphatically 'no')
UN: Support, make more democratic and weaken the influence of the Security Council
Nukes: Seek international treaty banning or placing them under UN control
Foreign Aid: Cancel all debt owed to the US and leave them alone

Social Policy:
Abortion: Oppose abortion regulation and support federal funding. I am conflicted on 3rd Trimester abortion, but ultimately, it's not my decision. In addition, we should be investing in reproductive education, focusing on safe sex, but not abandoning abstention entirely.
Drugs: Support legalization of soft drugs. Tax them and hold them up to the same standards as anything else being sold to the public. (These standards should be increased btw.) Decriminalize hard drugs, with fines and mandatory rehab after multiple offenses. The cost for rehab should be fully covered by the federal government. Lower the age for alcohol of all types to 18.
Censorship: None at all. No flag burning amendments, no restrictions on freedom of speech, no regulations whatsoever. Period.
Gay Marriage: Legal federally. What's really more important is protecting LGBT people from losing their jobs, eviction, etc. based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Death Penalty: A federal constitutional amendment prohibiting it under all circumstances. I all oppose life imprisonment without parole, but defined by statute.
Prostitution: Only arrest those who hire prostitutes, not the prostitutes themselves.
Church & State: Separate. I'm best decried as a secular catholic.
Affirmative Action: Neutral. I wish it wasn't needed, as I would prefer a discrimination-free society. However, our history as a superficially based society suggests otherwise.
Hate Crime Laws: I would support in principle, but there is now way to measure whether or not a crime is a "hate crime." So I don't support them in actuality.
Immigration: Make it easier to become a legal citizen, and make it easier for illegal residents to become legal. Against a border fence.
Stem Cell Research: Support its expansion, including federal funding.
PATRIOT Act: Repeal in its entirety, and oppose most kinds of surveillance.
Gun Control: Ban assault weapons, create a universal background check system, ban concealed carry, and restrict the kind of guns police can carry. Tying into this and PATRIOT Act, I don't any further surveillance systems than the universal background check system.
Assisted Suicide: Legalize nationally. It's the patient's choice.
Gambling: Legalize nationally. I don't want taxes to be high on it. The better answer is education.

Electoral Reform:
Term Limits: Only for appointed positions and the president. If the people don't like them, they'll be voted out.
Statehood: Any territory that wants it should be granted statehood. Yes to Puerto Rico and DC. I don't agree with the attempts by sections of states to create new ones.
Voting Age: 18
Campaign Finance Reform: Require complete transparency, limit contributions to $9,000.
Voting System: Popular vote and PR-STV.
Gerrymandering: Not real passionate about it. Bipartisan committee I guess.
Voter ID: Will lead to racial profiling.

Economics:
Welfare: Expand the current programs, no decreases in funding.
Unions: Strongly approve of the right to unionize. Oppose all right-to-work laws.
Privatization: Oppose privatization of social security, schools, etc.
Environment: Ban fracking, ban mountain-top mining, set water purity standards, protect all endangered species, invest in green energy, etc, etc, etc.
Minimum Wage: If the minimum wage had always raised with inflation, it would be at $21.
Taxation: Abolish the sales tax, with the exception of controlled substances and gambling. Raise Income tax on the rich drastically, which should be the primary tax.
Healthcare: ACA didn't go far enough. A single-payer is the best choice.
Trade: Protectionism prevents globalization. I support regulating outsourcing, but to give one corporation an advantage over another based on nationality is bad.
Pork: End corporate subsidies for the most part.
Subsidies: I support farm subsidies for low-income farmers. Also, temporary subsidies to green energy, to speed up the transition. Otherwise, end corporate subsidies.
Military: Increase veteran's benefits, decrease heavy artillery funding in the military. Spending is really out of control there.
Corporate Regulation: Constitutional amendment denying corporations the same rights as people.*
Education: Increase funding overall. Oppose creationism in schools and voucher programs.*

Foreign Policy:
War: The only wars that ever needed to be fought were the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI, and WWII.
Israel-Palestine: Oppose military intervention. I'd like to see both be sovereign states.
Draft: Oppose in all circumstances. It's essentially slavery and has no place in modern day society.
UN: Is necessary for a successful foreign policy and the best way to get us on track to eliminating war.
Nukes: Drastically reduce nuclear arsenal.
Foreign Aid: Good in most cases, though I don't want it to create imperialistic relationships.

Summary: Your typical Social Democrat. I admire Bernie Sanders, among others. Strongly support worker's rights, strongly regulating corporations, and generally expanding welfare. Feel very strongly about gay rights, strongly support gun control, and social libertarian for the most part. I am strongly opposed to the draft and military expansion, support strong environmental regulations, and would prefer if we move away from the electoral college and towards actual democracy.

*added two: corporation regulation and education

How was World War I a remotely justified conflict?
I didn't mean starting it was justified. I meant that I oppose intervention unless the it's a world war, at which point it becomes almost unavoidable.

We managed to avoid it for three years in the early part of the last century, for good reason.

Would a citizen's militia even be practicable? The way military technology is moving, the future is increasingly a small cadre of highly trained professionals not a massive civic army. Not to mention that despite what the NRA says, the militia in the American Revolution had pretty mediocre performance compared to the Continentals.
