Don't know how he was personally or even what his principles were, but the fact is that he sucked as a general and campaigned on a "Peace Democrat" platform.

What?

To those criticizing McClellan for being a Peace Democrat, that's incorrect. While the 1864 Democratic platform supported peace with the Confederacy, McClellan was not himself a Copperhead and campaigned on continuing the war.

Thus, I put "campaigned" in my critique.

May have singlehandedly extended the war by around 2 years with his incompetence.

As a first rate administrator, he was just what the Union needed after the debacle at First Manassas, who fused the disparate (and demoralized) volunteer militias together into the Army of the Potomac.  That legacy seems to be overlooked here.

His fighting spirit, however, left much to be desired...

A traitor who was willing to keep slavery indefinitely to end the Civil War.  Massive and epic HP.

I respect his organizational genius and he was an excellent trainer of men (who loved him for it) who for some reason had some very paranoid fears about his enemy's numbers which he continually inflated. He also deferred too often to very poor corps commanders. The Union needed someone like him early in the war, and it is sad he gets a lot of hate. He would have been a good staff officer.

For the person who called him a traitor: he didn't campaign in 1864 on peace, and ignored that plank in the platform. I think little Mac wanted to convene some sort of "conference of states" to bring back the South into the Union peacefully.

Absolute failure of a general. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was a traitor, just extremely incompetent. He also apparently thought of himself extremely highly, and only became general-in-chief by basically forcing Winfield Scott to resign.

Not voting.

For one, the Democratic Platform didn't seem to be as devoted to reuniting the Union or ending slavery as the Republican Platform.  On the other, there was at least a chance under McClellan that the unjustifiable and racist and hypocritical Civil War draft would've been done away with.  So yeah, I'm leaning Neutral on this.

Needless to say, Lincoln was still the better man.

Certainly better than anyone else he Democrats could have nominated in 1864 (besides maybe Ben Butler, of course) but that isn't saying much, since half to two-thirds of that party were honest to god traitors seeking to aid the destruction of the Union.
