2014 film.

I'm slow this year. I've only seen American Hustle and Captain Phillips. I'll no doubt see the rest of them at some point, my plan is to see The Wolf of Wall Street as soon as it's in the budget theater and I have the time.

Best

Gravity
Nebraska
American Hustle
The Wolf of Wall Street
12 Years a Slave

Worst

Am I the only one who didn't really find 12 Years a Slave to be that great (except for Fassbender, who is amazing there)? and I'm the only one that absolutely loved Nebraska? I feel so alone Tongue

I'm going to watch Philomena and Dallas Buyers Club in theaters this week. I'll probably manage to get a copy of Captain Philips too.
Her will be released here after the Oscars and I want to see that one in theaters, so I suppose that one will be ranked after the fact.

I have only seen 12 years a slave and Her.  I would rank them in that order.

Dallas Buyers Club sucked b/c the real guy was bisexual and never a homophobe, but they made him a straight-savior who starts as a homophobe until he gets AIDS.

I haven't seen any of these movies, but if any movie deserves an Oscar in 2014, its Inside Llewlyn Davis. I almost lost my car in the flooding that occurred while I saw the movie (alone, as my friend who I was trying to wrangle a Sadie Hawkins invite from didn't show up), but I still was in a good mood because the movie was that good.

My friend with whom I saw it liked it, but didn't love it. I went in expecting to be disappointed, but I found that it was a stunning portrayal of the violence inherent in the system.

That makes it a bad film?

Many great films (not saying it is one, haven't seen it) have sacrificed facts in the name of art.

It did get two nominations... but not likely to win either.

I doubt that anyone could rationally explain why American Hustle got a Best Picture nomination, but Inside Llewyn Davis didn't. It's just one of those things that doesn't make any sense.

There was an afternoon showing of Philomena at a theater by my work so I took a Bushie Halfday and went to go see it.  I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected and would rank it 5th, ahead of Hustle and Wolf.

Unfortunately, 12 Years A Slave and Nebraska aren't showing anywhere near me so I'll have to wait for DVD.

I won't judge American Hustle since I didn't see it, but Llewyn Davis was the best movie I have ever seen in theaters, and definitely my second favorite movie of all time.

No, not just that.  I wasn't a fan in general, but that just made it even worse when I read it.

It was, but frankly I found the constant tragedy to be a little bit tiresome. I guess not "enjoying" the movie is kind of the point, but it wasn't my cup of tea (maybe the fact that I had a sh**ty day influenced my opinion). Cinematography was pretty great though, so were the performances of the actors, It's not like I thought it was a bad movie.

On a similar note I watched Philomena and Dallas Buyers Club during the week and I tweaked my list a little bit in the top spots. This is the update.

Best

Nebraska
Gravity
American Hustle
Philomena
The Wolf of Wall Street
12 Years a Slave
Dallas Buyers Club

Worst

Will probably watch Captain Philips before Sunday.

I will be seeing DBC tomorrow night, but it will be after the Oscars Sad

For me:

1. 12 Years a Slave
2. Nebraska
3. Her
4. American Hustle
5. The Wolf of Wall Street
6. Captain Phillips
7. Dallas Buyers Club
8. Gravity

Didn't see it in its entirety: Philomena

12 Years a Slave was clearly the best of the bunch. Gravity was definitely the weakest (although there was still a lot of good stuff in it). The rest of them are bunched up very closely with each other. I could easily flip the order of some of them depending on my mood.
