This was a debated topic at work today. It came up over discussion of The Crow.

Two other good candidates would be Clueless and Reality Bites.

I would have guessed Clueless before even reading the OP.

Well, most 90s action movie ever.

You've obviously never seen The Crow. It's one of those movies without knowing beforehand you can still pinpoint its release date to only a 2-3 year range despite not including any explicit references to current events or famous people.

That's interesting, because after the second time I watched it (which would have been about 10 years ago now), after the credits rolled, I specifically remember that my friend who I watched it with guessed that it was made in the 80s, and was surprised when I told him it was released in 1994.  But I guess people often underestimate how quickly styles change in popular culture.

Fight Club is pretty damn 90s even if it was released at tail end of the decade.

A recent Cracked article touched on this. The columnist named Mrs. Doubtfire, Space Jam, Independence Day, and The Rock.

I reckon you need a dumb Adam Sandler movie in there. Maybe The Waterboy?

Try explaining the plot of that movie to someone who's never seen it. They'll assume the writers MUST'VE been on acid or something.

"See it's about Michael Jordan who meets the Loony Tunes. He needs to train them to play a basketball game against aliens."

BTW some blogger discovered the original website for that movie is still online and untouched. Have a blast from the past and enjoy the 1996 internet!

If you're going to include an Adam Sandler movie, try Billy Madison. Also the only movie from that era of his that's watchable to anyone over the age of 16. (I said "that era" because he had a handful of decent roles in atypical movies for him like Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me.)

Billy Madison is indeed a better pick. And then you've got Tommy Boy for Chris Farley. Dumb and Dumber. So many stupid infantile comedies Smiley

Speaking of animated films, Disney released some very memorable ones. Lion King. Aladdin. And the very first 3d animated feature length movie Toy Story came out in 1995. Another excellent contender for most 90s animated film might be Nightmare Before Christmas. Okay, it's not exactly 90s ish.. but I can't not mention it.

Yeah, you really have to narrow it down into categories.

Honestly I find Billy Madison inferior to both Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy. I think those characters having a bit more emotion and relatability improve the humor. Still, this guy is totally unwatchable. I can't even remember the last time I saw one of his new movies. He's ruining whatever he might have had with his first three films. I found Click interesting and haven't liked anything at all since.

50 First Dates was watchable. Not 90s though I believe.

Even though I haven't taken the time to watch it yet, my first thought for this topic was Pulp Fiction. (I know, I really need to watch it some time.)

As for others mentioned, I'd say Mrs. Doubtfire is certainly up there. I've seen that movie more times than I can remember. I'd also have to put Dumb and Dumber on the list. Big Daddy was great, but it really doesn't fit for definitive 90s movies.

Mrs. Doubtfire is a good one.

Air Force One is typically 90s for me.

Pulp Fiction, in all likelihood.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with Depp and del Toro would probably not have been made as such any other time than the late '90s. And by Terry Gilliam too! One of the best book adaptations ever.

I'd also suggest some big budget action / suspense flick like The Rock.

Airheads (1994) with Brendan Frasier, Steve Buscemi, Michael Richards, Adam Sandler, and Chris Farley is also up there.

I wouldn't say the movie itself is inherently "90s," but my sister and I always associate Jumanji very strongly with our childhood in the later part of the decade.

For an animated pick, A Goofy Movie, full of 90's fashions and Pauly Shore.
