Imagine Obama and Clinton would both have run as Democratic presidential candidates in 2008, with Biden as Obama's VP candidate and Richardson as Clinton's running mate.

Either would only have been on the ballots in those states where they'd won the respective primary/caucus.

What could a 2008 presidential election map look like on that condition?

P.S.: Nevada and Texas are Clinton states!

McCain wins due to a split Democrat vote.

Clinton: 218
Obama: 121
McCain: 199

North Carolina belongs to Obama's column (I suppose that was just a slip).
Indiana would arguably have gone for Hillary, who had won this state's open (!) primary.

I think McCain would win in a landslide, because Obama & Clinton would have simply split the Democrats. You have to remember McCain polled at 46% in 2008, how much of that do you really think he would have lost? McCain would have won every state Bush did in 2004 & then a good amount of states that were anywhere near close.

I also think he chooses someone other than Palin as his running mate. I always thought he chose Palin as a way of getting dis affected Hillary voters. Remember, if the Democrats had counted the Florida & Michigan primaries, Hillary wins the nomination.

It goes to the House, Where McCain would have an even better chance because the Democratic party was just as split between Obama and Hillary in Congress, as it was within the General Public, while the Republicans were (more or less) united.

In a such a scenario there is no vote-splitting between Obama and Clinton at the statewide level because only one of the Democratic candidates is on a ballot in any given state.

However, the election gets thrown into the House where the GOP has a leg-up due to their unified party.  Clinton and Obama probably strike-out a deal in a scenario such as this, and one of them is elected president with the other landing a very lucrative executive post in the administration of the other.
