Does anyone know where I can find party ID numbers by age for each state?  I'm particularly interested in numbers for Colorado and Arkansas.  I have a theory that age may factor into why both these states are trending differently than they were pre-2000, but I'm not sure if it's valid or not.

The best source for that are the political parties in each state. The state's election officials usually don't provide those type of summaries. The party databases have lots of demographic data, more even than the state since they combine many sources (not just election registrations) and cross reference them. For instance a party database could tell you all the registered Dem voters in a county who are licensed physicians older than 50.

So, my advice is to contact party officials in states of interest and tell them you are working on an academic project. If they aren't too busy they may be willing to answer a few specific questions. It will help if you are doing this through a school.

Colorado's January report by Age/Gender.

For AR, you may have to go the route muon has suggested.

And the older the voter, the more Republican they are, as well... which is kind of what I expected for this state.

Thanks, guys.

And what about open primary states that don't have party registration?
