It seems the demonstrators don't give a f**k about the facial veil ban and the "no-go-zone" that the police ordered yesterday:

Looks like the police has it under control so far.

But they needed to tear gas and arrest a few of the demonstrators, who then went back to do a sit-in.

Well, no surprise it happens when the police is obviously favoring the neo-fascists.

Huh?

The police is putting a perimeter to protect them, even from journalists!

Well, in many respects the journalists are worse than the protestors when it comes to an event like this.

But neither the protesters or the journalists are the worst. Those racist, nationalists and fascists in the middle, protected by an allied police force are the worse.

That's hardly relevant when it comes to protecting them from harassment.

But they didn't hijack the Hofburg; they've paid their fees to use the palace as a venue for a ball. They're not the ones trying to break the law in cold blood. You're deluded and your argument is a farce.

Their presence is causing riots, therefore the ball is a threat to the public safety.

No, the presence of rioters is causing riots.

I understand where MaxQue is coming from here- the fact that vile fascists are having some ball and being taken seriously is pretty enraging. They have the right to have their fascist get-together, however. Perhaps if they could be encouraged to have their ball in some solidly FPÖ ski resort, or something?

No, but the fact it's Austria and than the mainstream political party aren't willing to do against it is very worrying. Must we wait than they seize power and do another genocide before doing something about them?

I hate the FPÖ as much as anyone, but they're not doing anything illegal...and therefore are worthy of protection from violent rioters.

This should be rather obvious...

Ehm, you kind of got it backwards. The ones doing the rioting are presenting a threat to public safety.

I actually agree with you that it's a shame that a ball like this is still able to be held in Vienna.

But on the other hand the government parties are unable to do much against it: The Hofburg event agency is a private company and if the Far-Right fraternities pay them well for holding this event (which they probably do, considering the size of it), the SPÖ and ÖVP can only appeal to the event agency to scrap it. But not forbid it.

Anyway, an overview of yesterday night:

* 20 demonstrators injured, 5 police forces injured - all of them slightly (tear gas and bruises)
* about 80 arrests
* 1 Mio. € or more in damages (mostly shops and cars trashed)
* 20 police cars thrashed
* 1 police station severely damaged by rioters

And if you want to know what went on inside the Hofburg, here it is:

The FPÖ then held their "New Years Convention" today at the Vösendorf Pyramide just outside of Vienna, which was attended by 5000 delegates.

Strache had his usual attacks against the "Marxist Red-Green city-government in Vienna", asked Faymann to step down as Chancellor and attacked the "bureaucratic monster EU".

Strache also heavily attacked the left-wing protestors yesterday, by saying they are "far-left extremist boot troops":

Quote

The term "Stiefeltruppen" is very cynical here for the leftwing protestors (at least the "normal" ones), because we know who the real "Stiefeltruppen" were and are:
